Re: Higsons Bitter recipe
I have fond memories of drinking Higsons in my formative years in Liverpool. Sadly, it was not the same after it moved to Sheffield. I have ingredient information from the Liverpool version from the first edition of Protz's Almanac: Malt: 85.5% Pale malt, 3% Crystal malt, 3.5% Wheat malt, 8% Invert ...
Star Hops
Does anyone have any information on Star hops beyond what is available here? https://essentiallyhops.co.uk/product/hops/bare-root-hop-plants/star/ I planted one of these in my garden last year and it is now growing. I know it is a bit early but I'm wondering what beer I should brew with this when (h...

Re: The Home Brewer's Database - Les Howarth
Just seen this. Thanks for the good comments. For beers with only ingredient information then either 1. that is all I could find, or 2. there is a recipe out there (which will be referenced) that I want to be careful about reproducing because I don't want to infringe copyright. I've been informed th...

Re: Home Brewers Recipe Database - Les Howarth
I must admit, I've never seen THBRD on any of the CBA sites, even buried away on a non referenced page, but that it not to say that it was in the very dim and distant past. If we are the source of the escape, then I apologise, and will buy a copy asap. That's OK. I released it at the time so...

Re: Home Brewers Recipe Database - Les Howarth
Les, what's the score with that book being available on Google Books? Is it legit? Have you given permission? Are you happy to see it there? I haven't given specific permission and I guess that effectively Google Books is like any other book seller so they will have access to the book through the u...

Re: Home Brewers Recipe Database - Les Howarth
To set the record straight, the 1500ukbeers.doc appears to be a text copy of the database that was the basis of the first edition of the book. I supplied this to the Craft Brewing Association long before I had any thoughts of compiling it into a book and it appears to have "escaped" to the internet....

Re: CBA National Craft Beer Festival and Competition
Aled,
I sensed that you were not only OK about it but actually quite proud! It was liked you'd brewed a beer the judge was scared to taste!
Cheers,
Les

Re: Recipe For Progress Hops
I'm guessing that you want a recipe which has your home grown hops as a significant feature of your brew and, since you won't know their alpha acid content this means hops added at/near the end of the boil. A search of my database indicates that most brewers tend to use Progress mixed with other var...

Re: CBA National Craft Beer Festival and Competition
... & aleds acid beer was like vinegar, ... (The judge even refused to give the acid beer a score) ... Aled was highly amused by that! He said he was going to give the judge a bottle of Rodenbach. :D Although I didn't win anything I was happy that the judges didn't think any of my 3 beers were horr...

Re: Fumigation of my brewery
Steve, Cobwebs? Essential in any good lambic brewery  I'm not a big fan of lambic beers so I have no intention of ever trying to brew one nor deliberately infect my kit with a wild yeast. :-& My brewery has quite a few spiders and other life forms....which is why I brew under airlock. I don't u...

Fumigation of my brewery
I've just ordered some of these http://www.petremedies.co.uk/Flea-Control/Home-Environment/Fortefog-P-Fumers/p-123-124-226/ in an attempt to control a serious spider problem I have in my brewing room (garage). According to what I've read about the agent involved it is also effective on some spiders ...

Re: 35 litre Sodastream cylinders - discontinuing.
Sodastream may have changed their mind since they are now offering refills of their 35L cylinders on their web site: http://www.sodastream.co.uk/gbretail/category.asp?catalog_name=Sodastream&category_name=cylinders&Page=1 They charge you £12.99 for the full cylinder + courier delivery and will refu...

Re: Smiles Exhibition
Crikey Les that's a lot of crystal  Still I'll give it a try......I have gone to 15% crystal in the past with another beer. What about the chocolate - does 1.5% look like enough? Cheers Garry Garry, The amount of chocolate malt looks good. I'd guess it as being from 1 to 1.5%. Cheers, Les

Re: Smiles Exhibition
Following Les Howarth's chat on http://www.basicbrewing.com/index.php?page=radio this morning it reminded of this old favourite of mine......So I thought I would try to knock up and approximation brew :? Any thoughts? It looks good to me apart from the proportion of crystal malt which I'd suggest y...
