Re: Hop Spider Performance

I too tried a spider as more hops seem to be available as pellets, used a few times and wasn't happy as hop flavour was reduced. I now still use pellets but also use 40 to 50% leaf to act as a filter which works fine. Perhaps increasing hop rate might have been the answer but I think I was hoping th...

Re: Stockpots as fermenters?

I have used a Bergland 70 litre pot as a fermenter for several years, I got fed up of replacing plastic every few years. I don't have a tap in it as I don't like difficulty of keeping them clean. The lid is loose fitting and all I do is wrap cling film round it to keep out anything. As Kev said, bee...

Re: Black residue when cleaning SS

I use a nylon scrub to clean the stubborn residue in my SS fermenter with no problems, I clean it, rinse, tip out the water then spray with starsan and let dry.

Re: Stuck mash

Perhaps the drain off tube is touching the bottom with the weight of grain on it, try cutting a slot in side of it so even it touched the wort can get through.

Plenty of other spring varieties of malt available, try Concerto. The Malt miller sells it.

Re: Demise of Hop and Grape

It is sad, H&G was my first supplier of malt and hops, also my first 10 gallon boiler and mash tun came from them. But there again maybe I am partially guilty of their demise as I have not bought anything from them for years, we all like a bargain and go where we can get the best deal and those that...

Re: Using more than one yeast - good/bad idea?

I have tried Nottingham and Windsor thinking it would be a good combination in theory, in practice.. I had a murky brew that wouldn't clear until finings were added, never bother again!

Re: Hop filter

I too use a rectangular copper pipe hop filter in a boiler with two elements. I have as many holes drilled in the bottom as I can and also wrap a coarse nylon straining mesh bag around it. I can use up to 40% pellets with the rest leaf and still get no blockages. I used to get blockages till I used ...

I used to love a light split as we called it, always felt like you got that little extra beer as the bitter was always overfilled. That would have been 1978 as well
