Re: Kettle elements
Hello, I reckon two of these would be fine for a small (25-30L) boiler. One of the commercially-available boilers at 29L is only rated at 1.8Kw and they cope fine (from experience a few years ago). I suppose you'd want more power to get to the boil if you're a bit impatient though :-) Cheers, Chris

Re: CO2 in Leeds
Narangs Wholesalers in Bradford do pub gas if that's what you're after. They are based at the end of Sunbridge Road before the junction with Thornton Road.

Frozen Isinglass
Hello All, Does anyone know how effective Isinglass (1ltr of the stuff from H&G) is after it's been frozen then thawed? I was tinkering with my fridge yesterday and hoped I'd finally managed to get it to hold at 2c for lagering. I've just checked it tonight and the thermo reckoned it was -6c and eve...

Re: I *&^%$#@ HATE stuck mashes!
Apparently there are also benefits when continuous sparging as the reduced stiring results in less air being knocked out the grain causing it to float better. Is a floating grain bed beneficial? I've always knocked the air out of the mash so that it sinks when sparging and forms a filter bed. I thi...

Re: I *&^%$#@ HATE stuck mashes!
Have you tried underletting? May help in situations like this as it encourages the small particles to float up to the top end of the mash. Cheers, Chris Underletting is simply filling the mash tun through the drain (i.e. from the bottom) with the grist in place, right? Is there any benefit to it an...

Re: Flash Coolers
I'm planning on eventually using mine to pre-chill the water going into my immersion chiller. I don't think it would work well running the hot wort through the product coils of the flash cooler though - I imagine the coolant would heat up faster than the chiller can cool it.

Re: 2-tier brewery
My last setup was two-tier and I gravity fed from the HLT to MT and pumped from the MT to the Kettle via a 'Lauter Grant' (a small, modified pan). This meant that I didn't have to worry about getting the pumping speed right - I just switched the pump on when the grant was nearly full.

I'm not sure that the coldbreak in the FV would cause this - loads of people use CFCs and PHE's and still manage to brew clear ale. I've noticed that the Yorkshire Water report shows that the calcium levels for your area is low (12mg/l) - may be worth chucking in a spoonful or Gypsum to the boil to ...

I was contacted by a forum member a few minutes after posting the above and it only seems fair to to do this on a first come, first served basis. If, for whatever reason, he changes his mind I'll contact the member who PMd me next. Sorry to disappoint - it does look as though NO are selling the pots...
