I think its right, the regulator is definitely 1/2 female (tried with a spare plumbing fitting) but I can't find a hydraulic fitting of the type I need online anywhere. Could you point me to a few?

I found one on eBay but it is a strange version and not cheap.

As above, unless you are looking to make the very lightest of Tripels etc you will be fine with British malts.
