Re: Morland's Yeast - Recommendations?
FG for my OSH clone was 1.007. A bit drier than expected and an apparent attenuation of 86%. Flavor at kegging was tart with some yeast-derived off flavors. At this point, I can't recommend fermenting this yeast in the 20-24C range that I tried based on the recommendation of the Morland brewer. We w...

Re: Next ale
Looks like a successful brewday. I can't see how that beer will be anything other than delicious. I think I have that same stool. IKEA from the mid-late 80s?

Re: AG#4 BIAB Speckled hen Clone
I remember you mentioning this brew was coming up. It's too bad I'm across the ocean as it would be interesting to try both of our versions side by side. Strange about your plate chiller's efficiency being so low. I'd have a talk with the supplier.

Re: Old Speckled Hen Clone
Fermentation appears to have wound down so I pulled a gravity sample - just a hair under 1.010. The sample was cloudy with yeast and I think it was affecting the flavor. Didn't taste horrible but definitely green. Which is funny because I stopped having green beer a long time ago. Usually my low gra...

Re: Slow fermentation
I've had the same problem. I don't remember all the specifics now but I did a Wee Heavy several years ago that I fermented cool with WLP0028. Gravity stabilized right where I wanted it, probably around 1.018 and the beer tasted great (it was a Traquair House Ale clone). If I remember correctly, it s...

Re: Morland's Yeast - Recommendations?
Robbie, I'm so glad you posted because as you said, information on this yeast is quite hard to find. I hope between our experiences, we'll be able to record at least some data on it here for the reference of those like us who are interested in it. Sounds like your dad will be in for a treat on his b...
Re: Amarillo
Amarillo is one of my favorite hops! How do you like them in this beer?Tensbrewer wrote:Thanks for advice folks, a 5 gallon SMASH it will be, all pale male and Amarillo hopping. I'll also dry hop with Amarillo as I should have enough for this also.

Re: Morland's Yeast - Recommendations?
I set the fermentation fridge for 22C last night, and when I checked on it this morning, fermentation seemed to be tailing off, so I went ahead and bumped it up to 24C. Some sulfur coming out now too. Hope that cleans up. So far, nothing I've smelled from this yeast has made me think "Morland". Of c...
Re: 6X
How did this turn out? I don't think I've ever had the real thing, but I've been eyeing the recipe in BYOBRA. Do you think subbing invert sugar for the cane sugar and black malt would get closer to the real thing?
Re: Abbot Ale
Looks delicious! If you brewed it again, would you go with a more flavorsome yeast than s-04?

Re: VANDEEN BREWMISER AG #03 Testing continues
So how did it turn out? If you do start crushing your own malt, you should try conditioning it first. It will greatly reduce the propensity for the grain to clog your filter or stick your mash.

Re: Morland's Yeast - Recommendations?
I've done similar experiments before where many of us brew a particular recipe and compare the results. As you sai,d it is always interesting to see how different the resulting beers are. I brewed up the OSH clone yesterday, and this morning the Morland yeast was blowing a steady stream of CO2 throu...

Cheers KingBrianI, I do like a good brew day thread :) Can fully appreciate you missing that view now you're not outdoor brewing though, maybe time for a long extension lead  Cheers, Vandeen! I have an outlet out there, as well as several extension cords, but the Grainfathers they sell in the...

Old Speckled Hen Clone
Just got the OSH clone tucked away in the fermentation fridge and thought I'd share the brewday with you all. Everything went according to plan and it was a relatively uneventful affair. I did my part so as long as the yeast I harvested from some Hen's Tooth does its job, I think I'll have a nice pi...

Re: Morland's Yeast - Recommendations?
I thought I'd update this thread with some observations in case anyone is searching on the characteristics of this yeast in the future. This yeast gave off some rather unpleasant aromas on the stir plate. Harsh, solventy and perhaps even spicy as has been mentioned previously. I'm holding out hope t...
