Re: Cheap malt extract? - thoughts?

Can you describe the off flavour? A bit like pouring some dregs from the night before into your pint. Like its gone off, or a stale taste. I bought two tubs in case the first one was a bad batch but both had the same taste. You may want to try it just in case you like it, £12.50 isnt too much to lo...

Re: Cheap malt extract? - thoughts?

I tried some and could taste a strange off flavour. Maybe a strong kit would hide it.

Some online HB shops do 3KG of dry malt for around the £15 mark.

Re: Suffolk strong ale help

Sniper,

I brewed this a couple of years ago and my final gravity was 1.014

I remember when young the hop taste was marmalade, sort of a sweet citrus seville orange type thing.

Maybe that is what you are tasting and if so it will diminish as time goes by.

Re: Geordie Scottish Export. bke or dme best?

This is a review of "Export" https://abarwithnoname.wordpress.com/2012/02/29/mcewans-export/ I would concur with the review, the drink you mention is obviously very different. Here is a quote from their website: "Curiously, although called ‘McEwan’s Best Scotch’, it is not usually found in Scotland....

Re: Geordie Scottish Export. bke or dme best?

Would like it to be bit more like McEwan's export or scotch hence trying all DME for first time. Would this be better suited to cask or bottle do yous lot think? Cheers John Hi John, If you mean McEwan's from a tin, a leaky budget barrel wont give you that fizzy lager like carbonation that the orig...

Re: Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale

Hi Si,

I made the 2013 version and it was "bloody luvely Mun" as Mr Wales would say. One of the best toucans I have made.

The amirillo goes well with centennial to save buying more hops. Never used Nelson so cant comment on them.

Re: Coopers Double-Vision Stout (Toucan)

I made a Toucan stout last year. I also added 500g of DME and 500g of Dextrose which gave an OG of 1.060 made to around 21 Litres. I have to say I prefer the "Ditch" version, this was a nice full bodied stout but not worth wasting an extra can of goo on. Mine was kegged and drunk within about 12 wee...

Re: Coopers Green Neck Lager

I made this last year. It is a nice drop as they say down under but compared to our mainstream supermarket bottled lager it lacks bite. Ideal for the under age teenager and lactating female brigade ie inoffensive. I have bought another kit and intend to try a saaz hop addition. I wouldnt worry too m...

>Can anyone provided some tasting notes for the Suffolk?

I am on my last few bottles at 14 weeks old, it is best described as a liquidized bag of dried mixed fruit. The best kit I have made so far. You can drink it young if need be so a winner all round.

Re: Festival Beer Kits - New

Sorry, didn't realise you had a bottling bucket. I put the bag over the end of the hose in the bottling bucket just in case it blocked, which it didn't. As it was a dear kit I thought I may as well use it, but if you can't be arsed I don't think it will matter much IMO. "dissolving the sugar in 200m...

Re: Festival Beer Kits - New

1) the hops should I bag um or stick the bag over the back of the tap? Or just toss um in and hope it don't clog the bottling stick 2) the priming sugar am I dissolved that in water first and then adding it ? When I did mine there was not much that got caught in the little bag so I would forget abo...

Re: Adding Nutrient to stuck fermentation?

Hi Pugg, I did the same kit with an SG of 1055. I used a kilo of malt and 250 grams of dextrose. Mine also stuck at 1020, so I bottled it in 2L pop bottles. I relieved the excess pressure for three days then stashed them in the loft. It tasted like shite but got you pissed. I think it is just crappy...
