Agreed. As has been mentioned, the plain (non perfumed) Epson salts that B&M, etc, sell by the kg states it's good grade, and is only a few quid a kilo.

Re: cool box mash tuns
Ultimately, I suppose the main question is, do they hold temperature? Mine is made from a Thermos cool box, and I don't think it has any insulation in the lid, but it seems to hold temperature fine.
However, you've now got me thinking I should have a go at filling it with foam, lol.

Re: Crossmyloof Brewery Dry Yeast
From their 'standard' range, I highly rate the Kolsch and California Common yeasts, they really are excellent. I have had a good experience with the hog norsk yeast at 22° brewing a sort of strong bitter user upper with lots of EKG. Quite a clean yeast at this temp. I have a dark mild conditioning a...

No, I don't think you can. You need the antiseptic solution.

Re: Base grains
I'm a fairly inexperienced all grain brewer - less than a year, but I used to use MO, Golden Promise and what not. Then I realised that I'm a bit pants at brewing and needed to get my technique sorted a bit before worrying about base malt; it's reasonably low down the list of influencing factors in ...

Re: Brown ale
I'm a middle aged geezer, and drank a lot of brown ale in the late 80's. I've tried a few commercial ones recently; Newkie Brown has been ruined by Heineken and is pants, but Sam Smith's Nut Brown is really good. The reincarnation of Double Maxim is ok. I've tried to brew it once since I went all gr...

Re: Dry yeast for Kolsch
The California common is my go to for my golden British Ales now. The US pale didn’t seem to clear, their Cali Common may be a good alternative. That's really interesting, as I've only done traditional Cali common & Kentucky common ales and pseudo lagers with their California Common yeast (all with...

Re: Dry yeast for Kolsch
+1 for CML Kolsch. I don't get on with their real ale and US pale yeasts*, so wasn't expecting much, but it's a cracker. Their Cali Common is great too. The Kolsch will ferment at 12° if double pitched, needs a diactyl rest, and a few weeks lagering / cold conditioning. * I point this out to illustr...

Re: 1940 Whitbread London Stout
I’d guess that your invert sugar isn’t as dark as the real thing. I know that the stuff I got does give plenty of colour. Do you have the real thing? I'd love to get my hands on the proper stuff but living in Switzerland, it's not all that practical. Homemade is the only way to go. I'm sure the dif...

Re: Your favourite Graham Wheeler recipe...
If you like milds, the Bateman's Dark is a cracker. I do like mild too. How well does it keep? Sent from my CLT-L09 using Tapatalk In my case, not for very long; every time I walked past the keg it kept randomly gushing out into a pint glass. When this happened, I would drink it, only to see if I c...

Did you mash both beers at the same temperature?
