BIAB 1st time set up
Figures look ok. I'm guessing there is 6-7kg of grain, that will absorb the heat when added to the water, dropping the Strike temp of 72.4°C down to your Mash temp of 68.9°C. (BeerSmith has calculated the figures based on your pot volume, pot material, amount of grain used, temp of stored grain.) Wr...

How do you design a recipe?
A few suggestions to make it easier. Record all your readings, volumes (pre-boil, post-boil, boil-off, kettle losses, FV losses), gravity (OG, FG, etc), this will allow you to fine tune BeerSmith to your equipment & brewing method. You can then adjust your future beers to get closer to your planned ...

Asda Oxy Powder Whites
Clue is in the name - Oxy(gen), not Chlorine
Also needs a good rinse afterwards (to remove any residue), before you use your sanitiser, eg StarSan, dilute Vinegar/Bleach combo.
Lidl also do a version, W5 also in a non perfumed version, great stuff and cheaper than the Vanish range.

I hate bloody autosyphons!
Use a plastic window box, only a couple of quid from B&Q or similar, it's ideal for cleaning/sanitising the auto-syphon.
Once it's longer than the auto-syphon it shouldn't jump out.
Then when your finished transferring, use it to store the auto-syphon & other tubes, bottle wands, etc

Age has a much closer link to Alzheimer's disease, the only 'link' aluminium has is this regurgitated myth.daddies-beer-factory wrote:Aluminium has "unproven" links with alzeimers disease

Sourcing a 30cm thermowell for FV
Your right, there will be a cycling effect in heating/cooling, the BrewPi tries to minimise the effect on the beer mass rather than the air. With only one sensor your measure either beer temp or air temp and allow/put up with the variation in the heat cycling. The handy thing with the BrewPi, it/you...

Sourcing a 30cm thermowell for FV
Before you commit to a thermowell measuring the temp at the centre of the FV can i throw a spanner in the works and suggest that it might be preferable to monitor the temperature closer to the point at which you are effecting any change, and in a fridge using air to transfer temperature changes tha...

Or a slightly cheaper solution (if you have someone who can cut & weld S/steel) Cut this in half https://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/beer/beer-equipment/accessories-spares/racking-cane-stainless-steel.html @ £9.69ea And buy two of these https://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/beer/beer-equipment/fermentation-bucket...

Re: lagering....rule of thumb
1st rule of brewing - patience 2nd rule - see above 3rd rule - you get the message I would have thought only a week in primary is very short, i'd normally leave it for about 3 weeks before lagering (maybe even adding a D-Rest up to 16-18C for a couple of days, a week in). Then a minimum of at least ...

Re: TCP taste from my Hoegaarden clone
I always thought it was mainly caused by a reaction between some of the compounds in hops and chlorine in the water. If your water is treated with Chloramines, rather than just Chlorine (which you can just boil off or leave to sit overnight), you need to use Campden tablets to neutralise the Chorine...

Re: How do you measure mash temperature?
Do you recycle for all mash time or only when temp goes out of tolerance range, i.e. goes up or down? Why is the PID inefficient? I'm also BIAB and was thinking of going along the lines of STC/PID controlling the 2 elements & solar pump recycling into mash as you have. (As for going down the Arduino...

Re: Watery Thin beer - 2 attempts at BIAB, sad face
The Coopers PET bottles are the 500ml size, the 1tsp of sugar has been my normal priming rate (even for my UK style ales, this would normally be considered a high rate for the style). It looks like I'll just have to add more patience & time to see how they progress/condition. It means I'll have to e...

Watery Thin beer - 2 attempts at BIAB, sad face
Help, after a dozen or so Coopers & St Peters kits (all dme or lme) which worked well, all more or less improved with age & additional hops, I then moved to extract. Two attempts a Pilsner & an IPA, both bloomin' marvellous, if I do say myself, fresh, hoppy & delicious. Thought, I've got most of the...
