Re: potato wine
A better option to potato wine is Rice and Raisin, that makes a surprisingly good wine.

Fullers selling off brewery to Asahi
To alleviate some of the pain induced by this announcement I post this document I've had for some time and lost details of its origin. If you can use it Great. Fuller’s Brewing Director John Keeling walked over to a large bookcase in his office at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, West London and pul...

Re: biab.
On the other hand I tend to transfer my brews after about a week into a sanitized airlock FV, my experience is that it helps to start cleaning up the beer. Often at that same time I'm maybe adding other fermentables to the brew so its not a necessary step. My rule of thumb on fermentation coming to ...

Re: How long for hops/yeast to clear in fermentation bucket?
What you desperately need to avoid is bottle bombs. you said on the 24th of Nov that the SG was 1.010. The rule of thumb is to check your SG over a 3 day period and if it hasn't changed then its probably OK to bottle. If its still in the FV can you take another SG reading and if its the same you sho...

Re: Hop spider
Another approach is to make a "Hop Tea" by blitzing your hops in a food processor and putting them in a large Cafetiere or French Pump. then pour over boiling water and leave to steep for 30 mins then press down the filter and pour the tea into the beer, I've found this works very well.

Re: Tom Caxton Best Bitter
Silas, Does the instructions indicate which is which? One of them may be bittering hops (25gEKG?) and the other flavouring hops (15g Fuggles?). Use all of them. The bittering hops I would do as WA suggests and the fuggles could be used as a flavouring hop, simmer for 10 mins or you can also blitz th...

In some of the older home brewing books by Dave Shales and Dave Line Gravy Browning is mentioned as a medium to get the caramel colour.

Re: Sodastream cylinder orientation
Hi there, The gas in the cylinder is under pressure so it should work in the horizontal but it may well stop working earlier than it would were it mounted in the vertical as it may freeze - CO2 coming out under pressure when expanding will get very cold. Better, if you can to mount it vertically as ...

Re: Shredding whole hops?
So, done another Vienna/Northdown smash yesterday - BIAB and into cube so just pitched tonighted (starter from recovered PJ yeast yet again). Ran late last night so only cleared up late this afternoon. Binning the grain and emptying the hop bags and thought, for no obvious reason, to have a look at...

Yes, rinse the bottle after emptying, but what then matters is how well you sanitise the bottle before you fill it the next time.

Re: What Equipment should I get
The basic home brewing hobby will work very well with just the kit mentioned above, there are single can kits and 2 can kits which are the best. But if you want to get into all grain brewing, which it is generally agreed makes better beer than kits you need to have a boiler and a fair bit of time to...
