Re: Spent grain disposal - what do you do with it?

I give mine to my son in law who feeds it to some of his animals, he's a bit of a hobby farmer. If he forgets to collect it I put it on the compost heap, but it gets well mixed with other things from the allotment, a solid lump of it will not rot down properly. It gets mixed again when the heap is "...

Re: No Chill cubes - what do people use?

From the Yorkshire Water website~ Charges explained for customers with a meter Water - Yorkshire (excluding York waterworks) Standing charge per year £24.07 Volumetric charge per cubic metre used 134.80p: That's 1000 litres. I don't worry about it especially as I use the water for cleaning anyway. R...

Re: Fruit Wine Q

I've made wine with blackcurrants and it was almost undrinkable, needed plenty of time to mature. Bottled it in used wine bottles with screw tops. Probably didn't tighten them down in case fermentation continued but it then tasted very oxidised. If I were to do it again I would probably blend them w...

Re: Conditioning in king keg exposed to light

I can manage velcro better than buttons when I have been drinking. Definitely not see-through!

Re: Conditioning in king keg exposed to light

I don't know the answer to this but I got my wife to make me a jacket out of some blackout curtain material. It's not black as I thought it would be but off white and fastens with velcro.

Re: How do you sterilise/clean?

I like to ring the changes, sometimes oxy or thin bleach rinsed with metabisulphate or occasionally caustic soda for cleaning. Starsan for sanitising anything post boil. Starsan mixed in a 1 litre spray bottle, soft water here so seems to keep ok. Videne is another sanitiser that no-one seems to hav...

Re: trouble with hops

I have just bottled/kegged a Festival Landlord's bitter and the dry hops were floating on the top. The little bag they supplied to fit over the siphon tube worked better than expected. :D
Not done a kit for ages, hoping it turns out well.

Re: Skunking in bottles

Thanks for the tip Sadfield, bit wary of trying commercial samples, might have been made using hop "product" which resists skunking.

Will have to make some for the experiment, all my bottles that I have at the moment are brown. I'll bottle one in a clear bottle, that should be interesting.

Skunking in bottles

I was in my local HBS today and spotted some bottles of beer in his shop window in the sunshine (what bit there was), I think some of them were clear too. When I expressed surprise and suggested he would end up with skunked beer he said he always left bottles to prime in that way for a week to speed...

Thanks for conducting the interesting experiment, =D> I always leave a good space but have wondered whether it's the right thing to do. I know now.

Re: Target with Northern Brewer

Well, this is not going to happen. When I opened the packet of Target to use as first wort hops I realised why they were cheap. Well past using, wife walked in to room and said "baby sick". Hasty visit to the freezer to find something else. Ended up with Challenger and Styrian Goldings. All i...

Target with Northern Brewer

I have some Target and Nothern Brewer which I need to use up, if I use Target for bittering and Northern Brewer for flavour/aroma will I end up with something drinkable?

Hogarth:
Thanks for the info. I'm sure you're right about the long delay. My sanitation wan not quite as rigorous as yours and my method simpler.

Now I know that it's possible I will try again when I get the opportunity. Southwold is a long way from West Yorkshire!
