Re: Brewing tomorrow

Hi chap. Do you get any issues with extracting bitterness from the hops with a boil as short as that?
No, I just increase the hops a bit.
Good call mate. I boil with gas from a bottle. With the price of propane going up  there may be a time where more hops is cheaper than a l...

Re: Recirculation pump

I'd be far more worried about what is going to leech out of the cheap chinese cast iron and brass when hot water passes through it than any damage to the pump itself.

Re: Hop Tea In Keg.

30 - 60g doesn't sound too wrong to me. But there are so many variables to get to that number. How much is in the keg, how much flavour is already there, what the hops are, how much flavour do you want, etc., etc., I keg my beers, about 25L in a king Keg. I've usually added some hops at the end of t...

First brew now on the go. Picked the hops and straight into the boil. 150g of green hops.

Many of the hop flowers have leaves growing from within the petals. Not seen this before https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1882/29773177437_f9d49fa5b8_z.jp...

Re: Brewing Software Recommendations

I'm another fan of Graham's Beer Engine, does all I need it to do. I've had to add in some Hops and Malt profiles using the editor. My PC runs Linux rather than Windows but beer engine doesn't seem bothered by this, installed and ran just fine.

Emmerdale

Did anyone see the plot in Emmerdale? Trying BIAB on the kitchen stove. Wonder how that's going to turn out.

Re: cleaning boiler elements

If it's scale on the element then something mildly acidic, such as vinegar or citric acid, with a soak, should shift it. If it's dark from overheated malt, then I find covering the element with boiling water and stirring in a half a dishwasher tablet, does a great job.

Re: Best Quality BIAB bags

The bags I make are not round at all, and work perfectly well in square or rectangular coolers. I've tried a few times, doing a 3v brew and using one of my bags in the mash tun. Works really well, makes cleaning at the end a bit easier. A handy advantage is that if one gets a stuck mash then by lift...

Re: Best Quality BIAB bags

Hi Pete,

Yes, still available but I don't keep stock of that size (perhaps I ought to). Always do my stitching at the weekend so if you want one I can post one Saturday.

Best Quality BIAB bags

I've been selling these for over three years now, and improving the design bit by bit based on my own brewing experience. I'm now using a bag with a conical shaped lower half which makes draining quite a bit better. During my time brewing I've done a lot of reading and some writing on Jim's so thoug...
