Re: Advice on hopping needed..

Well, I've been away since late Friday afternoon, so for the first time ever I missed the initial 'vigourous' fermentation of my brew. It's very strange how you miss your brew when you can't keep an eye on it, as I found myself thinking about it a LOT while I was away! I imagined coming home t...

Re: Advice on hopping needed..

The stout had a starting gravity of 1054 at a brew length of 21.5 litres, which was a little higher than I expected. I guess that'll be the tin of black treacle.. :) The English bitter with hop additions had a SG of 1047 at a brew length of 21 litres, which is roughly where I wanted it. You could se...

Re: Advice on hopping needed..

I decided to treat it a bit like an extract brew. It's something I know nothing about, but I gave it a go anyway.. I boiled the 1.5kg tin of LME with 4 litres of spring water. Once it was sitting at a rolling boil, I added 20g of fuggles hops. 75 minutes later I added another 20g, and boiled for a f...

Advice on hopping needed..

Hi guys, as we speak, I'm setting up my gear to put a Coopers stout kit and a Coopers English bitter kit on to brew. The stout will consist of:- 1.7kg Coopers stout kit 1.5kg Liquid malt extract (found 10 1.5kg tins of LME in the garage that I'd forgotton about  it has a BBE of 11/2014, but n...

Re: Coopers Dark Ale

This kit is awesome with just DME or LME in my opinion.. :D
Although, saying that, I'd also be interested to hear any tweaks for this tasty kit too..

Re: Russian Imperial Stout.. first attempt..

Sorry, one more question guys.. I'll be adding yeast nutrient to the RIS, because I have had a few issues with stuck ferments in the past. I have some Tronozymol but it has a BBE date of 2013.. I rarely pay a lot of attention to dates on products, rather trust my eyes and nose, but can't really do t...

Re: Russian Imperial Stout.. first attempt..

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'll be knocking together a regular Coopers stout and another kit (I have 2 English bitter kits, hmm) for this xmas over the next day or two first, then I'm gonna dive into making the RIS. I'm not too bothered about the final colour, as It will be very dark anywa...

Russian Imperial Stout.. first attempt..

Hi guys, hope everyone is well :D Well, it's nearing that time of year again. Time to think about the tradition of making a Ditch's stout for Christmas.. and maybe another ale to put in another barrel too. I have also been thinking about making a RIS for some time now, ever since I tried some Fuller...

Re: Eight months in FV!

Still alive... even though I have drunk some of it! I decided I didn't fancy dying on my own, so I roped a few of the lads into trying it as well... the verdict was decidedly ok. It's a really odd flavour, but for some unknown and inexplicable reason it taste a bit like Duvel?!? It has a flavour tha...

Re: Eight months in FV!

Haven't tried any yet, so not dead! Plenty of CO2 forming during secondary fermentation, and pinching the seal on the top of the barrel lets out a pleasant beery smell. I have an inkling it might just be a major save. 8)

Eight months in FV!

 Yes... 8 months in the FV... I put a coopers Australian lager in the FV on December 3rd 2013, and had every intention of bottling it after 3 weeks or so. But Due to splitting with the missus and various other hold ups, it just sat there... and sat there. I kept looking at it thinking, "Must ...

Re: Kit brewing is not as rewarding as I expected.

Things I've found that improve kit beers (in order of importance according to me) are:- Making sure everything is clean and sanitised with no residual chlorine or chlorides (sanitise with cleaner then rinse with water and campden tablet to remove chlorides) Using bottled spring water Short brewing t...
