Re: English Trappist Beer

Early bottles were definitely murky. Not good.

But I had some a year and a half later and it was excellent.

I stopped using swing tops a few years ago because I found the crown caps resisted oxidation better.

Re: Removing chlorine

Based on my UK experience, the level of chlorine/chloramine in UK domestic supply water is not going to make your beer smell like a bottle of TCP/box of plasters. Invariably when a beer does go like that it's due to a wild yeast infection. This may not apply in the rest of the world where chlorine/c...

Re: torrefied wheat for a wit???

Thanks Jocky. I have checked with hydrometer and discovered it is an "idiot factor" at play here. It is possible with the Tilt to set calibration points and somehow I'd managed to set a few which seems to have had the effect of the "reading" it was reporting getting stuck at 1.037. The glass hydrom...

Re: torrefied wheat for a wit???

Cobnut I had a similar issue with my most recent wit brew, although I was using Imperial Whiteout yeast. According to my iSpindel it dropped from 1.046 to 1.030 over about 5 days, then hung out there for a week before re-started and took it down to 1.006 over another 7-9 days. The whole time there w...

Re: torrefied wheat for a wit???

Torriefied is kind of a different thing to wheat malt as it has a slight toasted note, but it should be ok.

Personally I don’t use malted wheat in my wit, I use flaked wheat and some flaked oats (for a smooth mouthfeel and a nice haze).

Pils malt 50%
Flaked wheat 40%
Flaked oats 10%

Re: The mysterious case of the diminishing sugar level…..

You said your readings with the hydrometer were temperature adjusted - what temperature did you measure at? If it was hot then there’s every possibility the heat damaged the hydrometer,

Another possibility is that you took a sample from the pre boil wort before it was completely homogenised.

Re: BM mash time

Not a Braumeister user, but at the weekend I did my first 30 minute mash and 30 minute boil brew, although I did also sparge for 30 minutes.

Efficiency was bang on what I’d normally get. I will see how this turns out.

Re: "Total Hardness"?

I'm not arguing that "as CaCO 3 " does or doesn't do the job. I'm griping because it's thrust on the general public as if they should understand it. And most of the time we don't! We naturally try and use the figures where they won't work and were never intended to work. Not helped by water supply ...

Re: I need an easy way to pump beer line cleaner through my lines

I put the cleaning solution in a PET bottle, and then put a carbonation cap on the bottle and use CO2 to push the cleaning solution through. Or use a keg, pushing the solution I've used to clean the keg out through the beer lines and taps.

Re: What size freezer for 4 kegs

I'm assuming you mean a chest freezer. I have one that is 900 wide, 550 deep and 840 tall, and I've added a 200 tall collar to it. It fits 5 slim AEB kegs - 3 on the floor and two on the hump (one is partly on the hump and needs support under it), or instead of the 2nd keg on the hump I can fit in o...

Re: Slightly hard water? No rinse sanitiser? What should I be using?

I only use a no rinse sanitiser as a final step on spotlessly clean equipment. As far as I'm aware it'll rinse off dust and other particles that may have drifted onto items after cleaning (floury grain dust in a brewing environment can carry infectious contaminants). It may also remove very limited ...

The Malt Miller resell the Murphys service: https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product ... rphy-sons/

I'm not sure if Murphys still sell direct to home brewers, but I've registered with them to find out if they do.
