Re: Another question about yeast starters/slurry
Have you ever wondered how your bottled beer is conditioning ? For many years I used to use a PET bottle for the the first bottle and by squeezing it over a number of days I got a rough idea of how carbonisation was progressing. I now have a far more accurate way of knowing. One of these. https://ww...

Re: Another question about yeast starters/slurry
If it's any help, my method is taken from IPA's. I sanitise a jug, then scoop half a litre or so from the top of the fermenting beer, including the krausen. Tip it into a kilner jar and put it in the 'fridge. It carries on fermenting, even at 4°C. The kilner jar allows exces gas to be released as n...

Re: Another question about yeast starters/slurry
Hi Ian, I like that as well. So you just plunge the wine thief in through the top of the fermenter and you should get some yeast with it? Have you tried drawing it out through a tap at the bottom of the fermenter instead of the wine thief? If you take the sample via the tap it is difficult to sanit...

Re: Another question about yeast starters/slurry
Tomorrow I will post pictures of my method. Dead simple. Don't worry about cell counting. I am still using yeast that I bought ten years ago. I have revived yeast from bottles of beer that were thirty years old and several of them are now in BrewLab's yeast bank.

Re: Really Bad Beer
"Definitely, though this particular brewery are only using a 100 litre system."
How can they expect to make money brewing that amount of beer even if it was good ?
They must have a lot of 120 litre fermentation vessels !
I brew 60 litre batches and that is for personal consumption

Re: Really Bad Beer
A young guy set up a micro in a village near to us a couple of years ago. How it is still in business amazes me. He produces four or five beers which if you were blindfolded you could not tell which was which. The only difference is the colour and the label. He is not alone. Over the years I have ta...

Re: Kegerator - where to driil for CO2 line
Going to set up CO2 line to keg this weekend through the side of a Blomberg fridge/freezer. Obviously concerned not to hit a cooling line so would appreciate any guidance on reducing risk if at all possible. For example, does anyone know whether the lines are generally sat centrally or more to the ...

Re: Schlosser Altbier
A friend has just brought me a bottle of this from Germany, and I'm impressed! Best bottled beer I've had for a while, so there's a challenge straight away, got to recreate this. Absolutely no idea where to start, anybody brewed an all grain altbier from scratch?? Graham has a recipe for an Alt Bee...
