Re: Beersmith3 Set Up

Have a look at Brewfather before you commit, it’s a much more modern package IMO.

Re: Muntons Brewery in a Bag range

I didn’t someone buy one of these from Lidl’s?

I think it didn’t end well.

Re: Whoops, messed up water additions.

Hmmmmm, my pH meter was calibrated just before use.

I didn’t and never do check the alkalinity as I blindly follow the Murphy’s water report.

Water treatment is something I need to look at in detail at some point!

Whoops, messed up water additions.

It will be nothing like Guinness but I think the smooth mouthfeel will suit this beer perfectly.

I’ve had a not so different beer in a bar across the pond and I much preferred the nitro after trying both.

Kev888 wrote:Was the pH of 5.5 at room temperature? If so then it is within an acceptable range, so the extra AMS doesn't seem to have been a problem.

Yes, cooled to 20 give or take.

Whoops, messed up water additions.

Ignore the 0.5, nibs in the boil. Not sure how that ended up there.

It will be served on nitro.

Starsan Discontinued ?

As Kev states, we just generally need to kill off beer spoiling nasties, with star san does. Sterilising is another level up.

I presume it isn’t completely ineffective against wild yeast?

Whoops, messed up water additions.

As I’m so used to brewing pale ales and such like when I made a Xmas stout today I automatically treated my water with AMS and DWB additions off the top of my head. Halfway though the brew the penny dropped. The AMS additions were double and it needed no DWB in the mash, just a little salt. The pH w...

Digital refractometer problems

I only use mine on brew day. Then use a hydrometer on keg day.

But I’ll try a calculator next time just to see if it’s anywhere close.

Re: Dried vs. Liquid yeast

Liquid has a much larger range, if your just brewing a pale ale for example you would notice no difference in quality between wet 1056 and dry US05. If your starting out keep it simple and use dry. Unless you are making small batches more often than not you need to make a starter. With dry you throw...

Starsan Discontinued ?

No final rinse. According to EU law, after using a sanitiser a final rinse is always required (for the pros). Regarding yeasts, yes, StarSan works well for yeast washing. Maybe they’re just waiting for the 31st then... Or just put for domestic use only on the bottle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapat...
