This stuff makes a decent mesh hop filter, and saves hacking-up perfectly good tap connectors!

Re: Ale from a corni keg setup???

Are you saying there's that much natural CO2 build-up by the very next morning?! That's remarkable, especially considering you've stripped most of the suspended yeast through fining! The equivalent level of bottle carbonation takes weeks to build-up. Yes, those kegs will pressurise overnight - if n...

Re: Ale from a corni keg setup???

Cool, thanks for sharing. Do you prime the finished ale when transferring to corny in order to naturally carbonate/condition at all? Yes - fined in the primary FV, then primed in the keg @ about 3g priming sugar per litre. It's been said in previous posts that cornies need a quick blast of CO2 afte...

Re: Ale from a corni keg setup???

Hi Liddley You asked for pics, so here's one: http://i1161.photobucket.com/albums/q520/airymary1/WholeBar.jpg The Jolly keg under the bar is tapped to the BE. A secondary regulator keeps the 'blanket' pressure very stable at 3.5psi. All the kegs you see are used to dispense this way at different tim...

Bargain Gypsum

I posted this in the Bargain Basement section. Thought I'd repeat it here, 'cos those amongst us who have to ladle-in the gypsum are likely to find their way to these pages. You'll find packs of gypsum here at £1.50 for 500g: http://www.souschef.co.uk/gypsum-powder.html Delivery is £2.99, so £4.49 d...

I've used these in-line on gas and beer lines:

No 23 litre kegs? How about 25 litre - go large!

Re: I am a 3yrs brewer

Hi First, I would take issue with Ink's advice to remove the lid. If the barrel is over-pressurised, do NOT attempt to remove the lid. As it comes loose, the pressure will turn it into a projectile hurtling upwards. Homebrewers have sustained facial injuries by doing just this. Second, I would agree...

Re: Advice on half empty kegs

Hi FF I too can't speak for the wine, but pressure barrels are designed to keep beer in good condition over a reasonable period. The PB needs to be pressurised, of course - if there's air over the beer it will oxidise and spoil. Run a little from the tap. if it comes out lively, and has signs of con...

Re: Home made HLT

I use same system as Fil - drilled-out tank connector, short copper pipe pushed through, tank connector compression fitting seals it water tight, and the ball valve fits to the end of the pipe. Inside, also similar, but I cheated! (Not having Fil's dexterity with soldering :( ). I use street elbows ...

Re: Home made HLT

I use a blue ex-chutney barrel for a FV. I find a hot soak in good ol' fashioned washing soda crystals pretty good for deodorising plastic - works for PBs that are overdue for cleaning too! :) The FV then gets a hot oxy soak after every use, which keeps it pretty fresh.

Re: Home made HLT

This makes sense actually. So your sparge water stays at the correct temp for the whole of the mash? And when you say PP bin is it the bin in my initial link? I heat the HLT to 79/80c for strike liquor, and sparge at 75. During the 80 or so mins of the mash, the HLT loses those 4 or 5 degrees, and ...

Re: Home made HLT

Nice one, cheers. Do you have a sight glass? Not sure if I will bother with one No, can't really see the point TBH. Would be easy to cobble one together with modern fittings though if it floats yr boat. Yeh, for my HLT I use one of the Copper Kettle 60 litre (67 to brim) PP bins, with a 3kw element...
