Re: cornies, polykegs.... definitive setup thread
Thanks so to start off with my first keg I should find a single stage primary regulator either a welders one or a pub one with a pressure release valve. If is a pub one I should make sure it's not a mixed gas one as they a different to co2 primary regulator. ( cornies don't need a PRV valve because...

Re: Sodastream gas & Sankey Coupler
Hi Barneey Not using Sankey couplers, I checked your recent post with all the pics - very informative, ty. I don't see any sockets, tho', just threads, so presume they are 1/2" bsp? I take the issues to be: A CO2 cylinder (Sodastream/any) needs a regulator How do you connect a Sodastream cylinder to...

Re: New beer engine
FWIW, I've never found a demand/aspirator valve to be essential. C02 left connected to the keg at low pressure - 3 or 4 psi - doesn't seem to dissolve into the beer if you prime the keg. It just stops the natural conditioning CO2 coming out of the beer into the keg, and prevents air getting in. Can'...

Re: Hot water urn
That 40 litre boiler looks pretty good - can turn up to 110c for a good rolling boil, and has a sight glass built-in. Just need to mod the tap to add a hop filter, and you're good to go :) I've never used one of the plastic tubs you linked to, but there are many threads about them on this and other ...

Re: My Beer Engine Setup
I won't secondary in them, I've only just started with this setup so my plan will be: - Primary ferment in brew bucket, dry hop if needed - Crash to 4 deg c - Secondary ferment in another brew bucket, clear with gelatine - Transfer to polypin at day 14 Beer seems to keep plenty of condition from be...

Re: My Beer Engine Setup
Nice setup, Andy. Polypin seems to keep the beer in good condition all the way down. Do you secondary ferment in them? You've managed to drill the side of the fridge without breaching the coolant circulation pipes! Was that luck or judgement?

Re: question for beer engine/corny users
Hi Paul From my post above, you'll see I use both plastic PBs and corny type kegs, with much the same results - no noticeable difference in foaming between kegs and PBs. That suggests to me that the poppet valves aren't a problem, at least, not in my setup. If you're concerned that lids won't seal a...

Re: question for beer engine/corny users
Hi I have a roughly similar setup, assuming the check valve you mention is like this: http://www.barleybottom.com/menu/product/&ID=116 I have plastic PBs adapted as kegs, into which goes CO2 at about 4psi. I've started to introduce corny type kegs as well. Output is to a cooling pod (with a recirc c...

Re: 23 litre cornie kegs, now sensibly priced?? UPDATE
They seal with the minimum of pressure, I run them at no more than about 5 or 6 psi and they therefore give me a cask conditioned style of beer. Hi Orlando I'm using 23 litre kegs too. I've found that mine don't need any pressure to seal them. I just add priming sugar when I rack beer into them, sm...

Re: How many kilowatts for a 50l boiler?
Cheers Chris. I have gone for 2 2kw elements which I will be fitting tomorrow and testing out. Good luck with the upgrade. Remember to use separate sockets (not one double socket). FWIW, my flat's electrickery manages the 5kw load no prob, and the wiring ain't great! I still have a fuse box where y...

Re: How many kilowatts for a 50l boiler?
Hi IMHO, more than 3 or 4 kw is OTT. I have a 60 litre stockpot boiler, into which I fitted 2 elements; 1x2kw and 1x3kw. I sparge at 1 litre per min, and find that, with both elements on, it's reaching the boil too fast - before I've finished sparging. With hindsight, I'd say a single 3kw is more th...

Counterflow Cooler
Hi All Anyone interested in my CFC? Skillfully made by a time-served craftsman - well, alright then, me - it's based on 8m of 8mm copper pipe residing in a coiled hose. I like to think of it as simple but effective - more or less flow from the tap will raise or lower the output temp, and it doesn't ...
