Re: Advice appreciated on first AG set-up!

Hi I've just started AG too, I went for a tap at the bottom of the boiler, with the mesh tube from a flexible hose connector as a filter, to stop this tube being coated/blocked by soggy hops I added a mesh disc (kind of a false bottom) which sits above it, I thought it might be overkill but for the ...

Re: Autoclave/Pressure cooker

My Prestige Hi-dome got 2nd hand from car boot has a 3part weight, 5lb, 10lb and all three screwed together = 15lb, i.e. 15psi.
Worth looking for a cheap one of these, the rubber seals and safety valve are still available as spares too

Re: Vintage glass airlocks

Wow, those are beautiful mate, sorry but I can't offer any help on age origin etc, but from what little I know about glass I'd guess that antique French is quite possibly correct. Thanks for letting us see them BTW your links seem to give viewers the chance to scroll through all your photo's, you mi...

Parry Boiler elements

Anyone got any Parry boiler experience? I picked a CWB6 up for a song the other day, very shiny and it boils up very nicely, notionally 27l capacity but seems to be about 36l to the brim. Want to insulate and use as my hlt BUT the element is one of the concealed circular ones and the surface is a bi...

Re: AG No.1 for steptoes ghetto build, with pics

AnthonyUK - Last night was a while ago now! It's a very long time since I had a pint of Flowers, I chose the recipe because it was simple and I remember really liking any Flowers pint I'd had in the past so I thought I'd start with this one. Tastewise I'd have to call it a good solid bitter, for me ...

Re: AG No.1 for steptoes ghetto build, with pics

OK I should have left it a bit longer but it's had 2 weeks in the bottle so I thought I'd try a pint. It poured absolutely clear and bright, lovely colour, nice fizz on the tongue, not too much just right in fact BUT absolutely no head whatsoever. Why is there no head at all? Obviously something I'v...

Re: AG No.1 for steptoes ghetto build, with pics

Ok, I know what I did was supposed to turn grain and hops into beer but it really does seem that some sort of miracle happened there? I've just bottled my AG1, a flowers original clone, and having tasted a bit I reckon it's a really lovely pint. I just can't get over the fact that it worked! And tha...

Re: The Homebrew Shop

Haven't used the postal service, but as they are 'only' an hours drive away I made my first pilgrimage there a few weeks ago when getting the ingredients for my first AG brew.
friendly staff, great range of stuff, definitely going back or using the postal method in future.

Re: The non shiny man cave method!!

love it Timbo! Definitely no piss take from here. There's nothing I like better than seeing a bit of recycling in action. With no offence to those lucky souls that can afford the full shiny, nothing beats the satisfaction of getting your 1st ag brew out of, literally a pile of (repurposed) rubbish. ...

Re: AG No.1 for steptoes ghetto build, with pics

Thanks Orlando, nice to have a simple explanation of what to expect. It's fermenting away now like a good 'un so we'll see how it comes out! And thanks for the positive comments about the build. It really has had to be done on a next-to-nothing budget so it was a relief yesterday after cleaning up t...

AG No.1 for steptoes ghetto build, with pics

Well, I finally got AG1 under my belt. Didn't (obviously) go exactly to plan but I do have a sweet, brown, bitter liquid in my FV beginning to ferment. Yay! Was supposed to be Graham Wheelers clone of Flowers Original, but we'll see how it turns out. Problems encountered: 1.Didn't have a spare flat ...
