Best fridge for fermenting and cooling king keg/beerspheres?

Hi folks, Just the other day SWMBO asked if a beer fridge would make a good birthday present! Wooohoo! Now it may come to nothing but all of a sudden I felt an overpowering need for one. What I'd like is one I can modify the way Jim (and countless others) have done by fitting a heater for fermentati...

device to suspend a funnel/strainer over a fermenting bin

As I recently had this problem I thought I'd post my solution. I had been using SWMBO to hold the funnel/strainer combo over the fermenting bin while I siphoned into it and getting tired of her sarcastic comments I began thinking there must be an easier way, mulled over various mental construction p...

Re: making a mash tun using barrier pipe?

thanks everyone, good advice. Darkonnis I've asked my local Indian takeaway ( a different one to the 1st!) if they chuck mango barrels out and was promised a "big" one at the end of the month if I go back. Will have to wait and see what "big" means, and see if they even remember me! Fingers crossed ...

Re: making a mash tun using barrier pipe?

I've been having a tinker this afternoon, I've stripped the braid from a couple of flexible plumbing pipes, only 10mm in diameter but I managed to stretch the ends out by working a plastic knife handle into the cut ends, then joined them with a short length of 15mm copper pipe and cable ties, free e...

Re: making a mash tun using barrier pipe?

food for thought,
thanks Deller, I'd forgotten evaporation losses. I think i'd better drag the burco down from the loft to do an accurate capacity check, then rethink! I'll try making up a braid loop with some copper tube and see how that pans out.

cheers for the advice

Re: making a mash tun using barrier pipe?

i was thinking of bringing 20 litres up to temp, straight from the hot tap (combi boiler so only needing to increase by 20-30c), filling the mash tun, then refilling boiler whilst mashing ongoing, then sparging with the 2nd batch of hot water from the boiler to arrive at 40litres. would this work ok...

Re: Has anyone brewed with date syrup or paste?

Update-

My neighbour and his beloved have tried a pint and both swear they love it! I think they're being honest with me.
I have since discovered dates are pectin loaded so that answers the problems I had clearing the brew, next time good initial filtering, and pectolase.

making a mash tun using barrier pipe?

Hi all, Right, first off: Apologies in advance for all the newbie questions, i've ferreted about for previous posts that cover my questions but wasn't particularly successful. I'm trying to assemble the necessary bits and bobs to try a grain brew, intending to do about 45litres as my mate and I will...

Re: Has anyone brewed with date syrup or paste?

Tasting time! Ok, the bottles have fallen almost clear but not quite, popping the lid on a swingtop bottle gave a satisfying 'fhut', then the brew did the champagne thing and frothed over the top, caught it ok in the glass and poured very gently down the side. The sediment lifted immediately even th...

Re: Air locks

Hi Scotty, Air locks would definitely be better, because they form a tight seal in the bottle neck and the water in them prevents any possibility of air blown germs finding their way into the brew, the water also guarantees that pressure is never built up because the CO2 generated can bubble out. If...

Re: Has anyone brewed with date syrup or paste?

OK, next update, I was away for 1 week and on my return I found the wort still as cloudy as ever, in went a dissolved sheet of gelatin, a good stir and I left it for 4 days. This helped a good deal but still left it rather cloudy. I've racked it again today, and got my home-brewing neighbour over to...

Re: Has anyone brewed with date syrup or paste?

Date Update: Ok, after about 3 days fermenting I racked the wort off through a strainer to remove the date particles because I could see it wasn't going to settle out without help. I left it to carry on fermenting and have racked again tonight, now I'm left with something much clearer, gravity has d...

Re: Has anyone brewed with date syrup or paste?

Ok, I guess that means no-one has so here goes, I've just boiled up 1.8kg of date paste, and simmered until it had all dissolved, this took about 6litres of water and the resulting liquid is very heavy with particles but otherwise strongly resembles a bitter wort in colour, I've made it up to 3 gall...

Has anyone brewed with date syrup or paste?

Hi, first post so go easy with me! I've started wondering about using dates as a source of sugar for brewing, I've looked around but cant find any useful info. probably looking in the wrong places mind you. This came up because I was in my local international food store the other day and bought a bl...
