UPDATE MB.Instead of usin a coopers lager yeast with wot come with the stout i used a gervain ale yeast The airlock has`nt bubbled 30 hours on but wots whipped up looks and sounds very good indeed

I`ll keep an eye open for a plastic one, for now i might getta spare and maybe a spares spare.Either will save me another unnecessary trip into town.

Its gettin better with time MG.As the weeks go by it tastes maltier n slighty sweeter with a nice bitter finish.I read somewhere on ere that fuggles goes well in stouts so tried it.As i`m fairly new to this game i think trying things is wot its all about.I now know a few things that work n a few thi...

Thanx Manngold.I gotta readin 3 hours later and it was where i thought it would be for 20l of stout weighing in at 1.044.

Will do MB.I got into town for a hydrometer and wot i`d drained earlier was readin 1.044.I did 20l of Burton stout about 2 month ago and this started life the same at 1.044.Am suppin that now and its realy good with fuggles so it`ll be intresting how the amarillo is with your recipe.

Thanx Jim,i never pour it back in, wot i meant was will it just be ok for a readin after several hours in the trial jar.I had already poured it into the trial jar b4 i discovered the snapped hydrometer.I`m goin down into Bishop Auckland now for a new one as its stopped raining.

Hello monkeybrew.Av just started fermenting 20l but I`ve spent just over £15.(No sale for me )But as I was about to take a SG readin I found my hydrometer snapped in half.Que Ditch and let the pleasantries commence..............

Hello I use these drops also and I always put them in b4 the brew so I would say that would not cause a problem.

I also have just come across this thread and am gonna try it as i like the look of it(Should suit me as i`m still just messin with kits)I have a burton xmas stout maturing which i tweaked by adding fuggles hops and am gonna sample this weekend at 4 weeks old.

I bored a 24mm hole in one of my 25l FVs.I fitted a plastic keg tap with a back nut.Its better than syphonin in my opinion.
