Very slow sparge/stuck mash on Grainfather

I am on brew number 7 with my Grainfather.

For some reason, on the last 2 I have had a mash that is very slow to drain and sparge. Not completely "stuck" but very slow.

Any tips for avoiding this?

Re: Ordered a Brewie! Have any good recepies?

Does it really clean itself? do you have to get involved as I really hate the cleaning side of brewing This really interested me as well. Found this video on youtube and I think the answer is no. It's very similar to cleaning a Grainfather, easier than a 3 pot system but I wouldn't call it "self-cl...

Re: Equipment Advice

Are you going to be large batches? If so, a spare FV and a set of bathroom scales is good for weighing large quantities of grain.

Thermapen make some very good quality thermometers.

Low CO2 pressure on new cylinder

Hi Connected up my new CO2 cylinder today. First time I have CO2 for 18mths. It had been left outside overnight and was fairly cold. However, the pressure seems very low. I know that CO2 isn't like a lot of other gas and the pressure isn't an accurate representation of contents but I can't remember ...

Grainfather - first impressions

Well finally got to brew with my Grainfather yesterday. First impressions: Bad A lot of money for what it is! (But I knew that before I bought it) Why is there no handle for the lid? Pump should be bigger and controllable. A 2nd connection for the pump, so you can connect a HLT for sparging, would b...

Re: Oxygen set up

If you right click on your image, you should get an option to "copy image address".

You then need to use the full editor, then click on the insert image icon, then you should get this "Image ", paste the image address in the space between the square brackets.

Re: Oxygen set up

How much do you use?

They sell the small cans on Ebay and it works out at about £1 per litre.

It could be an expensive way to boost your fermentation if you need a few litres each time.

Re: Insulated mash tuns

I might have a 50l one up for sale in a couple of weeks. It has a tap and a filter. Holds heat very well.

I bought a Grainfather so it may be redundant. I just need to get home to try my new toy.

Re: Insulation for beer fridge

I could do with some ideas for re-insulating this massive gap where my gas lines come in. It may be a little late for this build but why didn't you just make a smaller opening, pass the gas lines through and either leave the fittings outside or just inside? You could of then just sacrificed a lengt...

Re: Improving English Ales

Torrified wheat is to increase the mouthfeel and head but I can take it out.
Personally I tend to add Carapils rather than wheat, I have tried both and prefer it. Also, I find 2.5% certainly is enough for improved head retention.

Re: Improving English Ales

I think your recipes are a bit too complicated. Most English Ale recipes tend to have pale with a bit of crystal, some bittering hops with 1, maybe 2, late additions. I have done the 2 recipes below with a lot of success (IMO!) London Pride Pale Malt 3750g Crystal Malt 370g 60 mins Target 13g Challe...

Re: Ordered a Grainfather!

I'm haven't had a chance to get at the Grainfather yet, I work away and won't be home the end of next week at the earliest. I only ordered it early to take advantage of the free delivery from the Malt Miller in August, then they extended the offer to September. I'm really looking forward to it, I ha...

Re: Dry hopping with loose leaf hops

I've done it in the past, without a problem.

Although it improves utilisation if you put them in a weighed bag and sink them.

I've never had a problem with infection with either way, which comes up as a concern with some.

Kegerator top rail - where from?

Anyone have any idea where you can get the small rails to put around the top of a kegerator?

Something like this:
