Re: chlorine and chloramine.
Unless your tapwater smells like the local swimming baths i wouldn't worry unduly. Carbon filter or campden ok if you really want to but I used to use an overnight rest of well splashed water to brew with. Never had an issue. Personally I think, as i have read many a time, that any chlorine/bleachy ...

Re: quickie re beer in a box
I'm still very much undecided on the whole bag-in-a-box thing, I love the theory but am yet to see the reality. I've been through a bunch of different trials and am now conditioning the beer in something more robust to stand the pressure then racking off to the bag-in-a-box. Still not overly impress...

Re: Burner for HLT???
Hi,
The Malt Miller now stocks various burners and accessories (not the gas though). Give him a shout.

Re: Jerrican fermenter
Probably going to be a bit of a sod to clean. i use similar things for small batches as a secondary once there's no worry of krausen gunk sticking to the sides. They're still a bit of a pig to clean though.

Re: Dead mice in boiler
This is why I hand wash every grain before milling it. Brewday length is currently 17 months.

Re: Hop filter
OK, I'm just chipping in here but if you're looking at a filter of any sort that runs around the outside edge of the copper don't bother thinking about whirlpooling. That will get all the solids ie the hops that actually form the filter bed into a nice tidy pile in the centre, well away from your fi...

Re: Is My Shiny False Bottom Rubbish?
I've summoned the courage to attack my shiny false bottom with a grinder and taken about 1.5mm off the edge. I've slit some 6mm (1mm wall) crystal tubing and fitted that to the edge of the FB. Belt and braces I've also fitted a coil of 16mm, reinforced beerline into the base of the MT around the edg...

Re: Is My Shiny False Bottom Rubbish?
Thanks guys, it's pointing more to distortion of the perforated steel once the grain is in and the FB is no longer visible. Very surprising as it feels so solid. I'll try a combination of hose around the edge under the FB and adding a few more legs.
Fingers crossed.
Thanks everyone for your input.

Re: Is My Shiny False Bottom Rubbish?
Ahh I'd forgotten about the missing and should have mentioned that sooner. The missing leg was only at the time the photo was taken. I didn't realise until I got home but the bags of stainless bolts only contained 9 bolts... I had to go back the following day to get another bag. I suppose the edge m...

Re: Tribute mini kegs
I'm still on the fence about 5l mini kegs. I've tried all sorts of dirrent priming levels to get a flood of foam for the first pint then a reasonable pint then nothing. Burst of co2 from the beer king top tap and another pint... burst of co2 etc etc To be honest, 1 full 16g co2 bulb per keg for appr...

Re: Is My Shiny False Bottom Rubbish?
My grain is ordered just in time for each batch, freshly crushed by the vendor. Never had an issue with my old copper slotted manifold job. I hoped the SS false bottom would save on hassle, instead it's created a lot more. All tips taken on board.

Re: Is My Shiny False Bottom Rubbish?
I've had a look just now and can see no sign of a similar gap, so I think it must be an optical illusion in the photo or something, aliens maybe? I'm pretty sure i can't get anything around the edge of the FB so i'll try the hose around the edge of the pot under the FB next time and see what improve...

Re: Is My Shiny False Bottom Rubbish?
Yup, I tried that too, it fills the sieve man! Totally mad how much grain debris is getting through, besides I need to be doing other stuff while the MT is running off not having to stand over it. Really sucks! For 2 pins I'd go back to a slotted copper manifold but the cleaning is just even more ti...

It makes sense but what does that do?mrlard wrote:Easiest solution would be to sit the fb on a ring of silicone hose which would sit under it - if that makes sense
