Re: Salifert KH / Alkalinity test kit

I brew on a grandfather Paternal or maternal? Sorry, couldn't resist, it's Friday night. :D I suspect your Murphy's report might be one from a time when they were er, having a few problems. Aleman's comments have probably nailed it and your water companies report suggests it too. You probably have ...

Re: Mini Keg using carbonated beer

It might be possible to do it with the aid of one of the CPFs that are available on eBay, or the TapCooler ones the Malt Miller sells. But I don't know how the diameter of the bung hole compares with opening on a standard crown cap bottle.

Re: Sudden problems predicting mash pH

Thanks for all your thoughts. I did suspect my pH meter first, as I've had it a while now. So I bought a new sensor. Same readings. Everyone in my area gets their water from the same place, the Ladybower/Derwent dams complex. (That water is sent all the way down the valley as far as Derby and Notti...

Re: How much Special B?

I am dipping my toe in the realms of recipe construction from scratch for the first time and would like to try to make something similar to Anspach and Hobday "The smoked brown". I have never used Special B and suspect it can be overpowering but also is critical to the balance of this beer commerci...

Re: Beersmith 3 sale last day. Is it worth it?

US centric, particularly regarding liquour treatment, I ignore that. Apart from that I've used it for 7 years and it beats any other I've tried, mainly because it is continuously developed. Recommended. He still takes no notice of my niggle about the pop-up text in the Notes field hanging around fo...

Re: Frequency of pH meter calibration

Thanks all--seems like calibrating each brewday would be a good idea. Eric--the BNC plug and socket are a nice tight fit. I use reverse osmosis water to rinse between readings and throw the buffer solutions away after use. I calibrated it yesterday. I'll try it again in a week or so and see if it's...

Re: Hazy wort from pellets in Grainfather

Ah cheers I didn't realise that. So you leave it 30 mins or so to drop from 50/60C to pitching temp? Does that work better than chilling the wort straight to say 18C? After the 30 min rest I continue recirculating through the CFC until it's output is at pitching temp, which only takes a couple of m...

Re: Using extract in an "all grain" brew?

If I'm brewing 20 odd litres a high gravity beer I will usually add some DME late in the boil as a wort extension since with a limited boiler size such as the GF you won't get enough Sparge water to fully rinse the grains, unless you are doing a parti-gyle or have more than one boiler to split the w...

Re: Hazy wort from pellets in Grainfather

Dave - just curious you say ' I usually recirculate through the CFC to get the temp down 50-60C as this is the ideal temp for the cold break to precipitate. Then leave to settle for 30 mins before running off to the FV.' - is that right regarding the temp? or is 50-60 in Fahrenheit ? Cheers 50-60C,...

Re: Hazy wort from pellets in Grainfather

First time I have used all pellets for a brew in my Grainfather. 250g of low AA Saaz pellets. The wort was incredibly cloudy, I have never seen anything when using an immersion chiller, as I guess that the pellet sediment drops out as part of the cold break, which doesn't happen with a counterflow ...

Have a look for a carbonation chart, that'll show you the correct pressure for a given temperature.

With regards to gassing and leaving in the garage I can't see why you'd have a problem.
There is one in LeeH's link on the previous page.

Re: Dry hopping in a keg - sanitation question

Just got my first corny keg - I have a 300 micron mesh dry hop stainless steel hop capsule. I'm planning to sanitise it with boiling water before dropping into the corny - but what about the hops? Should I make a hop tea by boiling the capsule and hops and then add to the keg? Or is it OK to saniti...

Re: Pressure leaking from my King Keg valves.

I have endless problems with these valves too, I wish someone would come up with something that works better. I'm in the process of replacing mine with gas-in posts because the Hambleton Bard ones are such a pain. The rubber seals are like the old Christmas Tree lights where every year you put them...

Re: Mangrove Jacks Belgians: M31 and M41. Any views?

Haven't been here for a while, after a few months off. Anyway, got my backside in gear and planning to ferment 5kg pale, 500g special b and a bit of sugar for a darkish 20L of Belgian somethingorother. I've got 2 packets each of M31 and M41. Never used before. Anyone got any experiences? Cheers Not...
