Re: Immersion Chiller - one x long loop or multiple short?

Thanks James, have you built your chiller now? If so, how is the performance? Still toying with the idea of 4 x 5m loops as the 4 way manifolds look like an easy way to make the connection, and show give essentially unrestricted flow. That, coupled with a 3/4 hose to chiller and the same (short leng...

Re: Immersion Chiller - one x long loop or multiple short?

A few quick measurements: Garden Tap: 15.7 l/m Tap + hose (1/2 inch, I think about 20m, unrolled): 11.5 l/m Tap + hose + chiller + exit hose: 7.5 l/m Observations: 1. My tap flow isn't great to start with, although I can't think of a good reason for that since we have a freshly installed 25mm blue w...

Re: Immersion Chiller - one x long loop or multiple short?

The thinking behind the Jaded chillers is all about throughput of coolant. Multiple parallel coils are one way of avoiding coolant flow restriction, but they also stress that using the shortest hose possible to connect to the chiller, and turning your tap on full blast. So the fastest cooling desig...

Re: I'm after a grain mill

Malt Conditioning
Really worth doing in my opinion, the difference in crush (bigger, whole husks with finer flour) is remarkable, for very little extra effort. The intact husks really do improve the circulation of my HERMS.

Re: How often do you strip your ball valves down?

Every brew for me, ever since an infection that I traced to it (it was disgusting, on inspection). I got caught out when I moved from gas to electric - over gas, the valve would get so hot that sanitation wasn't an issue. On an induction hob I can keep my hand on the valve mid-boil, and soon after t...

Re: I'm after a grain mill

I've been using the Brewferm mill for about 2 years, perhaps twice a month. It's been very good, but I have never owned another mill so can't compare. I crush very fine (0.7mm) after conditioning the malt and crush always seems very consistent (no whole berries), with nice whole husks after conditio...

Immersion Chiller - one x long loop or multiple short?

Hi all I am back from the near death experience of a full house reno/extension, finally having brewed up yesterday for the first time in ages.. Whilst chilling it down I was reminded of the fact that my current IC isn't really the fastest (20 minustes plus on 23 litre batch) - it is only 25 feet of ...

Re: SS Brewtech BRITE TANKS

There's 450 arnt they ? But I kind of agree, I'd be more inclined on bigger batchs to quick carbonate and then keg but for 50l I'd just buy a large sanke to do the job I think you might be right - I was looking at the 1 barrel version from the other thread! Still a lot though, when you could get a ...

Honestly, I think you are over thinking this. Just crash chill, take the bucket out and put it on a counter!

Re: SS Brewtech BRITE TANKS

What Fil said! The SS Brite tanks are an incredibly sexy looking bit of kit, but to be honest I can't really see a strong case for them as a homebrewer. If you want to carbonate in and dispense from a large pressurised vessel, then corney kegs are the way to go - a 19l keg will cost you around £30-7...

Re: Stainless pressure vessel

SS Brewtech do a 1 barrel brite tank now (just over 100l, I think): https://www.ssbrewtech.com/collections/brite-tanks/products/brite-tank-1bbl Price is a bit painful though! Not sure if available over here, but could probably get one of the UK SS stockists to include in an order. Keg (or kegs) soun...

Re: Peristaltic Pumps

1lpm sounds a little painful - doubtless it would be even slower than that in the real world. When I fermented in a bucket I would just remove the bucket carefully from the fridge after crash chilling, put it on a higher surface and fill as normal from the tap. After crash chill you really won't dis...

Re: Is switching to Slopes realistic?

Haven't got into slants yet, but I hope to one day. I do something in between, which is to make a starter (targeting about 200Bn cells) when I first buy a vial of yeast and split this into 4 or 5 sterilised plastic centrifuge tubes. Then make starters as normal with each, and brew, until there is on...

Re: "Loc-line" for recirculating mash?

I use a ring of 1/2 inch silicon hose with some holes drilled in it for my HERMS recirc. Works very well, with a bit of flexibility in design (e.g. drill as many holes as you want, whatever size you want). I also find it rests nicely on top of the mash, so it adjusts to various mash sizes without to...

Re: Making a fermentation chamber/fridge

All good advice, I have pretty much done the same. For an old fridge, drilling is probably neater (if you dare), but since I ended up buying a new one to replace a duff one I haven't drilled anywhere in the new one yet (until warranty period lapses, at least). I went with a 5mm sheet of alu for the ...
