Re: all grain brewing problem

In fact I have tasted this taste in commercial pints I've had but it was much more subtle Hi gnorwebthgimi Would that brewery be Adnams by any chance? I'm trying to track down a flavour in my brews and I've tasted it in their beers. Can't really describe it tho, the beer is still drinkable but I'd ...

Re: Emergency - cloudy (filthy!) wort

Hi

With my 1st mashed brew I had tons of break and bits of grain go through to the fermenter. It fermented well and all the gunk settled out with the yeast. The beer turned out fine so I wouldn't worry.

Cheers Tom

Re: recipe help

Hi Gjb123 I'm no expert but I can't see much wrong with the grain bill. Not used Cascade hops but I'm sure they'll be fine. As long as your method is sound ( although mine would have some of the more experienced on here pulling their hair out ) and you maintain a good cleaning regime, you'll almost ...

Re: all grain brewing problem

How do you mash? and what yeast's do you use? Hi I mash in my 15 ltr stockpot on the stove top and just tip the grain through a large sieve and allow the wort to drain into a holding bin. I put the grain back into the pot and batch sparge ( tipping through the sieve again ) twice till I have around...

Re: all grain brewing problem

Hi Soup Dragon Are you new to all grain? When I did my first kit I used filtered tap water (it took ages to filter 5 gallons of tap water!) and subsequent kits were not quite as good but good enough. So I've never really thought of water as a problem, but I'm hoping that my off flavours are being c...

Re: all grain brewing problem

Hi Flything Thanks for that. I agree with everything you say, will be trying out bottled water (with campden). I assume the bad tap water (I live in Suffolk and the water is harder than a muscle bound 80's/90's film star). It's either causing a bad taste due to the mash or the boil but probably bot...

Re: Mini Mash Big Lamp Bitter

This is where a hop filter is really worth it's weight in gold. As for the boiler for larger brew lengths there are many who have gone past their local indian restaurant and gotten hold of a blue mango chutney bin. these are as a rule hot filled and are of a much denser stronger plastic than the PP...

Re: Mini Mash Big Lamp Bitter

Until i recently fitted a hop filter i used muslin bags for hopping the brew. this meant that all of the cold break material went into the FV. Those that use a counter flow shiller also have this problem. It does indeed look like mud but it will settle out during the ferment and pack down with the ...

Re: Bottle after Secondary Fermentation

HI Glad to hear you're enjoying the fruits of your labor :) It's so satisfying to tell yourself that " I made this " and think of the money you'll save compared to buying it from Tesco's or Asda? You could put your savings towards another kit or two  Never used finings by the way so can't comm...

Re: Bland, Dull, Tasteless Tea Clone

Tom, I have done it as you suggest, with good results. The ideal way is two batches the same but it will also be ok like that. If that makes the difference to get your target volume then give it a go. I usually do two batches and (as my mash tun is a bit small) I collect higher gravity wort and dilu...

Re: Bland, Dull, Tasteless Tea Clone

That'd be just the job but the missus pulls a face as it is with just my little pot. I'm sure once I've got a few more mini mash/part boils under my belt I'll be eager to invest in something more suitable. I'll have to be on best behaviour for a while to swing it tho  It is only a matter of ti...

Re: Bland, Dull, Tasteless Tea Clone

Would be a bit difficult for me with just a 15 ltr pot. To be honest I was surprised I hit Graham's target, mind you 75% should be quite easy to hit. I might have a play next time I brew up :)

Cheers Tom

Re: Bland, Dull, Tasteless Tea Clone

I have only ever batch sparged and whilst i understand that the mash is roughly 2 to 2 1/2 litres of liqour to every kilo of grain i have always used slightly more i have a 20l boiler so thats the amount of wort i want to get basically no matter what the grain bill ( usaully around 3 kilo ) is i us...

Re: Bland, Dull, Tasteless Tea Clone

I'd have thought that 2 sparges would give better extraction than a diluted run off then 1 sparge. My pot is a bit tight on space so thought that 2 sparges was a good idea. The info I came across said to do just that. I must admit I was rather pleased to achieve the O.G. as indicated in Graham's rec...
