Re: PH tester

Does anyone know whether the pH buffer solutions will keep once mixed? I would like to mix up say 500ml of each (4 and 7) and put them in plastic water bottles so that the are ready to use whenever I need them.

If you use carbonated water, I doubt it.

Re: Diluting a barley wine

So if I were to dilute with just water, would I need to worry about pH? Finished beer should have a pH of around 4.5. If I mix the barley wine with a pH of, say, 4.5, with tap water with a pH of around 7.5 then the final product will have a pH of around 6. How and when do I treat for that, if at all.

Diluting a barley wine

I have more barley wine sitting in the shed that I am going to get through in the next couple of years. One of the barrels is a fairly simple recipe with nothing more than pale malt and some English hops and is around 9% ABV. How would it turn out if I diluted it 50/50 with water, aiming for an ordi...

Re: Water profile for Bohemian Pilsner

Thanks for the tips, Martin. Coincidentally, I came across one of your posts on another forum and had already decided to ditch the chalk in favour of gypsum and calcium chloride based on that. Just to clarify on your point about only treating the mash water - do you add enough just to bring the mash...

Water profile for Bohemian Pilsner

I'm brewing a Bohemian pilsner this weekend. I have some Czech friends coming over to visit in a couple of months and want to get it just right so am going to have my first bash and water treatment. I have checked out the Tesco Ashbeck bottled water profile and it is pretty close to the Pilsen water...

Re: Belle Saison yeast and Mandarin Bavaria hops

I finally got around to brewing this over the weekend. Wow, that Belle Saison takes off! I had foam gushing out through the airlock 12 hours after pitching.

Re: Out of date LME

I had a little sample of this again over the weekend and it is turning into a really nice beer, one of the best I've made. It's *really* smooth and the alcohol flavour is strong but not harsh. It's quite reminiscent of a smooth malt whiskey. The other half say it should be called "whiskey beer," not...

Home made dry yeast

Has anyone ever tried harvesting their yeast and drying it at home? I read somewhere about people drying their sourdough bread yeast on a tray in the sun. That wouldn't be sterile enough for beer making but am thinking something along the lines of a box with a heating element and some sort of steril...

Re: Out of date LME

This took over three weeks to ferment out so have just racked it out of the fermenter. FG is 1.032 and it tastes ok - quite smooth actually. A few months of conditioning in the barrel will should produce something drinkable.

Re: Out of date LME

I mixed up a little of this in half a litre of boiling water and it tasted, smelled and looked like wort so decided to give it a go. I had 9kg of the stuff so made a 26 litre batch of barley wine with 100g for chocolate malt and a bunch of spare hops that I had in the freezer. Came out at an OG of 1...

Out of date LME

Clearing out my brewing cupboard I came across several litres on light LME that is about two years out of date. It is in a container that has been opened and is half empty but I can't see anything growing on it. Googling suggests that aged LME gives a caramel and melanoidin character to the beer so ...

I use one of these 50w fan heaters and it works brilliantly for heating. Takes no space and circulates the air as well as heating. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Handheld-Electric-Desktop-Heater-Portable-Office-Winter-Air-Fan-Warmer/282820865862?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=582148831205&_trksi...

Re: Beer Engine to Corny Keg pipework

The LPG regulator is installed between the primary regulator and the keg and regulates the pressure to 37mbar (approx. 14 inchs head). The idea is to keep a blanket of CO2 over the beer without enough pressure to puch the beer out through the tap, provided the tap is mounted more the 14 inches above...
