Re: Grainfather counterflow cleaning

I use the cheapest NON SENT stuff I can get. Usually about £1 for a 500g tub. Home Bargains, £shop etc.

Re: Grainfather counterflow cleaning

Well I have had mine for coming on 3 years and all I have ever used is oxiclean. I put 1 scoop in 10L of water and heat to 66, pumping it through the chiller, leave for 10min at that temp still pumping then, empty, rinse and add 10L of clean water and boil for 10 min, pumping again all the time. Emp...

Re: Crossmyloof yeast

@guypettigrew that is hat I said before. I don't WANT to have to use finings but this yeast is forcing me to. Which negates the cost saving against so4 etc

Re: Crossmyloof yeast

With So4/gervin I don't need them, so why do I need them with this yeast. My wort is clear going in and all I want is clear wort out. Using protfloc in the GF and get nice clear wort out, but the week in primary/same in secondary and STILL cloudy going to cornie is annoying. It does drop some yeast ...

Re: Grainfather first brew - bit of a disaster

I switched my filter to a bazooka one. Used the rubber connector to join the bazooka to the GF.
Been fine till the last 1L or so left in the pot, using up to 100g of whole hops.

Re: Crossmyloof yeast

I seem to have clearing issues with the real ale yeast. So far every brew has been cloudy, even after transferring to a 2nd fv for a week. Not an issue with dark beers but I like my SMASH'es to be clear with out using finings.

Re: Grainfather first brew - bit of a disaster

Strange I have never had any issues using the formula from the manual (via my own android app) I usually have 5Kg of grain, 17L in the mash and 12L (cold from the tap) in the sparge for 20L in the FV for my cornies. This gives me about 1060 in the FV @20L. (dependant on the added adjuncts or straigh...

Re: Grainfather pump

I meant the OP. He was having bubbling issues.
It may also depend on your local water how hard it works.

Re: Grainfather pump

I just use the cheapest stuff I can get. Doesn't normally bubble too much at 66. There is always plenty of water left after the 15min of cleaning cycle. If you are getting a lot of bubbling then maybe you have a leak somewhere? When pumping water there should be virtually no bubbling after the initi...

Re: Grainfather pump

Mine stopped for the first time on the last brew (2+ years use now), a blow down the pipe and off it went again. This was at the mash recycle part. I have always cleaned it using oxy (1 scoop in ~10L) @66 for 15 min through the chiller, then boiling water for 15 min, I drop the recycling arm into th...

Re: Can I use old hops stored in the garage for dry hopping?

A few years back I found a pack of hops in a drawer, they had been there for about 10 years. Gold solid pack. Thinking they would be down in AA, I used the WHOLE 100g in a brew. ... It took SIX MONTHS to get to the point where it was drinkable, way too bitter. My 2015 hops are in the freezer so will...

Re: Grainfather 1st use, bad start to long night

I use pellet hops all the time, no real difference. Just do a whirlpool after "flameout" to get them to move to the middle.

Re: Grainfather 1st use, bad start to long night

Totally agree with above comments. With the GF ignore any comments about adding extra water etc. Use the formula in the manual and calculate the water values needed. I just heat to sparge temp, add the malt sleeve, malt and stir as it goes in, once all added and well stirred then put the top plate o...

Re: Fruit wines

My rule of thumb form many years ago, was 6lb of fruit per gal of wine. Clean/cut out any bad bits, chop and put in to a FV, add 4 pints of boiling water stir well along with a campden tablet and a large mug of tea made with 3-4 tea bags (or some tannin powder). Leave to cool then add pectolase, lea...

Re: Beer line to tap connect

If it is like the one I have, it is too small to take a beer line. I added a short piece of pvc pipe (3/16" ID I think) on it then added the beer line and a JC. Been fine for past year.
