Re: First brew of 2018 - Fullers Pride clone (sort of)

Fullers use brewers caramel to darken their brews. You can buy it from the HBS but it is quite expensive. I don’t worry about the colour these days as long as it tastes good.

Re: Gelatin fining

Just a word of warning. Gelatine works well in kegs or cornies but not so well if you are bottling as it makes the sediment more fluid and easily disturbed when pouring.

Re: Gelatin fining

Isn’t wheat beer supposed to have some yeast in suspension?

Late hopping for bitterness

If you're adding hops only 15mins from the end, does that mean you're only doing a 15min boil? Doesn't seem much point in boiling for, say, 45mins with no hops, and then adding the 15min hops - or have I missed something? That’s exactly it. Because the hops are boiling for less time you need more o...

Re: King keg do you use still? ???

My three bottom tap King Kegs have served me well for many, many years. The original, and horrid, drum taps have been replaced by taps from old Boots beer barrels. No longer available, unfortunately, but the ones linked to by MarkA look good. Mine have S30 adaptors in the lid which take the large H...

Re: King keg do you use still? ???

I still use a bottom tap King Keg even thought I have a cornie. It works fine although I did fit a pressure gauge to the lid (about 15quid from eBay)as I once had one split from over pressurising.

Re: BM owners (and GF / aio owners) would you go back?

I spent a year or two building up a 3v system only to sell the whole lot at a loss and buy a Braumeister. I really wish that I had had the confidence to buy the BM at the start. I could never go back to the faff of tubing and pumps and all that, not to mention all the cleaning and storage space that...

Re: Braumeister diseister!

I have been using a BM for eight years. In fact I bought one of the first programmable models after the manual one and have made all of the mistakes imaginable plus a few more. I now have a fifty litre and a twenty litre. The wort fountain you describe is almost certainly due to not thoroughly mixi...

Life & Death

Just had a can of this from Tesco (Vocation Brewery). It won't suit everyone and I'm not going to get into that whole hop-forward, American IPA, Brewdog-hating argument but for those of you who like Brewdog beers it's well worth a try. I think it's delicious and has a nice malty backbone even though...

Re: How do you aerate your wort

I just drop the wort into the FV from a height and add the yeast. Fermentation always takes off like a rocket.

Re: Keg Life

I currently use a cornie keg and a plastic bottom tap King Keg. The King Keg sits in the garage where it has been cool and dark and the Old Peculiar that was kegged in early December still tastes great. I would say you would be okay for at least 5 months although, as pointed out previously, hop arom...

How low can you go challenge.

I'm sure it is quite possible to make GOOD beer cheaply. I'm lucky to have paid my mortgage off and splashed out on a Braumeister but for many people making pub quality (or better) beer as cheaply as possible is an important consideration.
