I find it unnecessary to lager a kolsch, simply crash cool after 2 weeks in the primary at 17c.
Just treat it like an ale... Because it is....

Label glue removal
Had to share this incredible way to get glue off bottles... Sad yes...
But it always bugs me how well labels are glued on,... I like a clean bottle..
Any how.... Bicarb and olive oil mixed into a paste leave on for a minute and wipe off... Made my brewing year...
Who would of thought it..

Just following this up.. HB did indeed fix this, they sent a courier replaced the computer and sent it back... Can't really question that kind of service.

Sometimes you can hold buttons or a combination to reset..... However I have contacted Hambleton and they are going to collect it and fix it... Not bad service really.

Re: Kettle Souring... Failing!
I've just kegged my first kettle soured beer and it worked a treat... You need to drop the pH before pitching the lacto. After the initial short boil it was then transferred to a sanitary fermenter as opposed to leaving it in the copper. I dropped the ph to 4 with citric acid, which some wouldn't us...

Does anyone know if you can reset the controller on the bulldog brewer mines playing funny buggers today by changing the temp when you change the power settings and when it gets to temp it continuously switches on and off... Frustrating because it's been easy to use recently.

Re: First kettle Sour beer
Just digging this back up... My brew is still on the yeast ...I think I'll pull it today .. But the question of why you would sour the wort with acid is a good one. My thoughts are you are speeding up the souring process but also you are creating a perfect environment for the lacto, and your also cr...

Re: Unpleasant bitterness
I would be supprised if it was the Hop especially one so low in AA...Although if there was more stem and leaf than cone, they can cause astringency.
Could you of over sparged again this will cause astringency by exacting un wanted tannins from the grain..
Just a thought.

Re: How long to leave kolsch
There's no need to lager a kolsch. I generally leave it to ferment for 3 weeks at 17c and crash cool for the last 2 days .... As long as you've left it long enough to clear any possible diacetyl you can't go wrong oh and clarity. It's an excellent strain of yeast and some yeast flavours are desirabl...
