Re: bottles

I’ve broken the tops off bottles with my first cheap wing capper. I bought an improved model with a spring inside and used it for years before finally getting a high end Grifo bench capper.

They are nice quality and it’s a pleasure to use whole hops which are getting impossible to find.

Re: Harry Mason beer engine disassembly

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIvRJ_9zkzk It looks like the cylinder tops are push fit. Reassembly at 9:50. And he breaks it so not the best video but you might be able to find a video taking it apart. I didn’t know they have a metal cylinder, that’s nice! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PIvRJ_9zkzk

Nope.
Even the Minch malt is £40 a sack at The Homebrew Company now!
I just paid twice that, $100 for a sack of Crisp MO

Re: Graham Wheeler’s book and extract recipes.

I’ve never added enzymes or know anyone that has, but most mashes are done at 66C for 60-90 minutes. You can mash out at 75-76C if you like which will denature the enzymes for a clearer runoff. More importantly the warmer temp will help dissolve the sugars. Do not steep grain much above 75C or tanni...

Re: Graham Wheeler’s book and extract recipes.

You need to do a mini mash to convert some adjuncts liked flaked barley. I’ve never done that because you may as well start doing all grain, but might be an option before diving in.

Re: Graham Wheeler’s book and extract recipes.

The most important parts of a recipe are percentages (fermentables and hops) and characteristics like IBU, OG, EBC etc. because everyone has a different mash efficiency. Recipes assume 75% but my efficiency is about 85% and most brewers on JBK achieve much higher. Extract is a known and reliable qua...

Re: Blocked keg?

Once when I dry hopped with pellets some got into the keg and I had to remove the poppet from the post and the spring / gubbins out of the disconnect to have a clear path to serve the beer.

You can dispense using a hand pump but you would need a source of gas (or air if drinking straight away) to ensure you don’t collapse it at some point.
How does that work with a hand pump?
Cask aspirator / breather.

Re: Granny state!

When I started brewing I accidentally made a virtually non alcoholic beer because the yeast stopped fermenting. It bottle conditioned perfectly so I assume it was similar to Windsor. And / or perhaps there was something about the malt extract I used. My friend came up with a slogan for it, “Gets you...
