Re: Magnetic Stirrer under £17

Phone charger was connected using two bits of paper clip, hard drive magnet I was using came unstuck from the fan every now and then. Apart from that it did its job fine.

Re: Kegerator Fan

I've been considering fans, but the big computer fans not the average 100mm jobs (120-140mm, but I've seen 200mm, and at least 2, perhaps 4). You can get arrays (for laptops?) or "bulk buys" for not too much. I might yet use 100mm fans in bodged into an array of six or so as I've got them sitting a...

Re: Kegerator Fan

I ran an old computer fan powered by a phone charger. The air doesn't need to move very fast.

Magnetic Stirrer under £17

After years using my own computer fan/hard disk magnet/phone charger, I found this Magnetic Stirrer so cheap I couldn't resist, With the 5% discount that was £16.18 delivered complete with a stir bar. Works perfectly.

Hmmm, the arguments in favour of getting a mill are slowly slipping away!
Is it shiny? That counts.

Re: Grainfather grain mill

My black and chocolate malts hang around for ages and I always think the beer is better when I get a new, freshly crushed batch from MM. That may be due to expectation bias, or it may not. I don't expect anything extracted for my black malt apart from colour ... the remainder of my 500g bag is well...

Re: Should I get a Mill?

You're thinking about freshness? These days I pay £3 extra to get my 25Kg in 5x5Kg sealed bags and I can't say anyone who has drunk my beer has noticed any difference since I started buying it that way. I've always bought crushed and I get through two sacks per year, at worst the grain was crushed s...

Re: PH Level of Star San

If you're going to rinse, particularly if cash is tight, then diluted thin bleach is a great option. It took me a while to realise the chlorine smell after rinsing the Jerry can was simply the air trapped in it. I also wondered if a campden tablet in the final rinse would work but looking at the dil...

I'll choose 1, 2 and 3 but add 4: I like tinkering, bodging, experimenting with equipment.

By the way pH is not spelt ph, PH or Ph. pH stands for the the negative log of the hydrogen ion concentration. Sorry to be picky but if you want to delve into the subject it is best to get it right.
In the title? Probably just auto-capitalisation. My Android tablet is set up to do that.

Re: ITC-308 troubles!

I've seen a couple of the videos that show an instantaneous jump. It's either electrical interference - I'd try moving the equipment to another part of the house, or aliens - did you wake up the next morning after having weird dreams with a sore butt hole (i.e. sore for no good reason you can rememb...

Re: Just how bad is fermenting at 32 degrees?

I used to ramp up my brewing in the spring so that I could give summer a miss. I got a freebie fridge probably five years ago. When not fermenting at 18C or crashing at 3C it spends most of its time storing bottles at 12C which is quite a nice temperature to store our stash of chocolate during the h...

Re: Making a fermentation chamber/fridge

Control the fridge with an STC-1000 or similar. The thermostat for the fridge may be some distance from the bottom of your beer which could get much cooler than you want. I tape the sensor near the base of the FV. 4°C is fine for cold crashing. I bottled a batch on Saturday which is beautifully clea...
