Re: microbrewers handbook

The cider thing comes from Mr T Blair urging farmers to 'diversify' during foot and mouth in 2005.

Re: Mashing a Bohemian Pilsner

I used floor malted Weyermann Bohemian Pilsner malt last year. I read it wasn't fully modified,so needs a step mash.

Re: Wine bottles.

Yes. It's a cork, but with a plastic stopper on the top. I've used real corks with a corker and plastic corks, but personally prefer these.

Re: Wine bottles.

I use the plastic topped corks. Far easier then ramming them in with a corker. As above, some bottles fit and others are too big,if you live near a supermarket with a bottle bank, you get to know which ones do and don't.

Re: Newbie

I cut down the sugar last year, and l didn't like them! By the time l've racked twice and topped up with water, it does lower the ABV somewhat.

Newish hops

Been looking at Malt Miller hops. Next brew will be a rye pale. There's some newish hops on their site, Pioneer and Fusion. Has anybody used these? I'm assuming this is the UK trying to keep up with the USA?

Re: Yeast pitch rate

Pretty much the same as beer. Wine should be 10% finished, then primed as beer, and dosed with Chapagne yeast,in the bottles. The bottles need turned and tipped until the yeast in on the cork. Commercial wineries then plunge the bottle neck into ice to freeze the yeast plug and remove it and the cork....

Re: New Grainfather owner

I've had mine for a few months, done my third brew. Only issue l've had is unscrewing the fitting off the kitchen tap! Excellent clear wort, efficiency and ease of use.

Re: Off flavor after fermentation but not before

No. Just used to wash in normal detergent and sanitise with Star San. I've now acquired some PBW,new tubing, new bottling stick. Fitted taps to FVs and done away with auto syphon. Annoyingly,it has been about 5 of the 30 brews l've done,so never managed to trace int, until l did the kit,so now it's n...

Re: Off flavor after fermentation but not before

I have an intermittent issue. It even tastes fine after fermentation, between there and drinking out of a bottle,l get an odd plasticy taste and smell that you can taste on the burp. The beer is a bit cloudy. Ive put this down to oxidisation (as l had it on a kit) and dispensed with auto syphon and a...

Cheers. Been brewing 3 years, never heard of a forced fermentation test, you learn something new every day in this wonderful hobby! I'd not shut the door on my fridge properly, it went down to 19 overnight. Just totally dropped!

WLP 530 stuck?

Hi,l brewed a massive beer for Christmas. It was 1092 into the FV. I ramped up to 28c when it was at 1032. It's been at 1028 for a week now. I've transferred into secondary,as l've read it may kick off again. I'm thinking of getting a pack of Wilkos Gervin, just to finish the job off-the flavours wil...
