Adjusting pH
I know there has been a load of comments on here about this subject but I haven't been able to find an 'idiot's guide version' so perhaps you can help. I'm in North Yorkshire and according to our suppliers the pH (Hydrogen Ion Conc.) recorded for my postcode is 7.3 which seems a lot higher than the ...

Re: Beer turning bitter during conditioning
Can only add that I did the Graham Wheeler (so-called) Landlord clone to bottle and had the same problem - the beer was always a TTL in name only in any case. Could well have been my fault in the brewing although it's the only all-grain brew so far that I've had this problem with. Having said that, ...

Re: Best general purpose malt
I buy from a single source and don't even know 'the grower'. Plus don't have the storage so tend to by only what's needed for a couple of brews at a time. I also tend to primarily do hoppy IPA's and APA's and did comparison tests last Summer using Golden Promise, Optic and Maris Otter - all with a t...

Re: Measuring AA% for home grown hops
Thanks for the link. Different site but exactly the method I came across before. I don't think there is a solution to this other than trial and error.

Re: Measuring AA% for home grown hops
Fair comment RPT but the idea is to get to the point where I don't have to pay for my session beer hops - hence persuading the wife she's going to enjoy seeing the new extension, garage and the 30 new abnormally tall fence panel posts festooned with lovely green hops - sorry, flowers!

Dehydrators and Vacume 'Packers'
Following on from my last post (Measuring AA% for home grown hops) any recomendations for the necessary kit to store this years harvest?

Measuring AA% for home grown hops
So last years Northdown and Prima Donna (recommended cos I'm up North) are sprouting well and the UK Cascade and Fuggles bought for me by the wife last October are coming through nicely as well. I've already split the Northdown and PD as there were side shoots all over the place so I should at least...

Re: Brewing process comments please
I hadn't seriously thought about switching to electric to be honest. Don't know why as it could bring the whole job 'back-in-house' (could easily ramp-up the extraction in the utility for the boil and which already houses the brew fridge) - less temperature variables etc etc. Having said that, it's ...

Re: Another Hop Aroma question
I wondered about boil off myself. Think it would need to drop to less than 70C before adding the hops to avoid losing the bulk of the oils, and if you're down to that point, what are you actually gaining over dry hoping? Might be worth a trial though if I find myself with some spare hops.

Re: Brewing process comments please
Cheers vacant. Putting those 3 suggestions together - element(s) sat under a rack linked to a controller (as on my brew fridge) with cylinder jacket around would well sort mashing issues. The rack - defo - thanks. The jacket not quite as straightforward as if I need to fire up the burner it needs to...

Brewing process comments please
Just on brew 17. Am happy with my base Porter and getting closer to a base IPA. My brewing process is still very clumsy and amateur hence I'm asking for suggestions to improve things with what I've got or at minimal additional cost. I brew in the garage which has electric but no water or gas - using...

Another Hop Aroma question
Been following Albino's post with interest as I want to increase both aroma and taste in my IPA's. Currently dry hopping which has improved things but still not 'hitting the mark'. Have bought oils from the Malt Miller which I had intended trying in my current brew after fermentation but then came a...

Re: 'Risk' lagering with the weather?
If you've a garage/shed with some sort of cupboard inside it does take the wild fluctuations out but it's still a risk - forecast where I am for the next week has early morning (2.00am) temperatures ranging from +9C to -4C! Understand you not wanting to tie-up the brew fridge though - did a pilsner ...
