Never... one way or another my ball valves always have very hot water through them a time or two prior to draining the wort into the FV, which I'd always hoped would be sufficient.
I also always make an effort to rinse the valves opening/closing multiple times after a brew.

Re: Yeast Starters
No, I'm not an enzymologist, WA. My background is in molecular biology, though. Genes that code for an enzyme are not down-regulated (switched off) irreversibly, under favourable conditions, simply by a temporary lack of substrate. And I know it's not me suggesting otherwise :D Don't be upset by my...

Perhaps but I won't because I don't have a direct line to him, don't have any knowledge on which to base a disagreement with him and, crucially, can't be arsed!
Is there a more accurate book you would recommend on yeast?

Re: Yeast Starters
I can only assume Chris White is recommending all malt because it contains sufficient nutrients for culturing yeast for fermenting batches of wort. I think the quote I put above clearly shows his reasoning is enzyme related, although he does talk about nutrients too. Don't get me wrong, if I can st...

Re: Yeast Starters
Yeast prefer simple sugars like glucose. It's us beer drinkers who prefer malt, where about 50% of the sugar is maltose. The idea that yeast lose any ability to metabolise maltose after being cultured in any media not containing maltose is a myth peddled by 'blog wisdom'. We shouldn't be so superst...

Re: Yeast Starters
Interesting info, thanks, and certainly makes sense for pitching into mead. However most of what I have read would suggest that firing yeast up with the enzymes to ferment honey (glucose and fructose) and then pitching into an ale (maltose etc.) wasn't best practice by any means? Anyhoo I look forwa...

Re: Can anyone identify this part
There are a number of basic designs for 2L/4L/5L mini keg growlers that are taking over the growler/portable keg market. The easiest source of them in the uk is from Mr Lard. https://www.brewbuilder.co.uk/growler-dispenser-cap-disco.html https://www.brewbuilder.co.uk/growler-dispensing-cap-faucet.h...

Re: Yeast washing -- how to get the yeast off the trub?
You pour it off, rinse and repeat several times and then the percentage of trub decreases.

Re: Hop Growing 2017
Morning all My cascade and EKG hops are almost ready for harvest, I may not have time for a "wet hop brew" so was considering the purchase of a dehydrator. Anyone got any recommendations in respect of makes and models etc ? Regards Paul I just laid mine out on sheets of newspaper in the airing cupb...

Re: Aldi remote control barbecue thermometer
I've got a non-Aldi similar thing for BBQing; tried it for mashing once. The probes aren't completely waterproof and I expect the Aldi one is the same, pretty major drawback for this application.

Re: Hop Growing 2017
My first attempt at growing this year so only had small first year roots in pots against the house. They were slow to get going and haven't really gone past 7ft. Not seen any flowers or anything yet and its prob too late now. I am up north near Aberdeen so not ideal climate but I think the main pro...

Agree - I think if there was a public/private option when saving the recipe it would largely police itself.Clibit wrote:I think it would make sense for MM to not automatically publish every recipe generated by people using the recipe builder. It's just a monster that's out of control.

Re: Dead Pony Club
If you are considering trying this recipe I would recommend you don't barrel it. Most of us who have tried Dead Pony Club will have done so in bottle or can, and I would say it's a drink that suits bottles rather than cask. If you go for cask you will certainly recognize the distinctive DPC aroma. ...
