Re: PhD IPA (a red DIPA with a load of hops)
Hey TC - Yep - it's still quite bitter - beersmith tinseth says 100IBU. I don't think it's quite that but it is bitter - from the fermenter it was very bitter but has calmed down now - and mellows with every sip. With the dry hopping I put in 2 lots of hops for about a week each. About 100g each tim...

Re: PhD IPA (a red DIPA with a load of hops)
Been in the keg for. 2 weeks now. Very tasty - sweetish but not too sweet imo. Hop flavours and aroma are insane - compared to any other beer I've brewed and on a par with some of the super hoppy us beers I've tasted. Needs a little longer for the beer to condition properly though. Hides the 7.8% re...

Re: Vac pack and done?
Damn - missed your thread about brawling cross Dave - those hops went quick eh??! Think all are accounted for now it seems. With free del from simply hops it seems silly not to do a few...!!! I reckon vaccum packing and darkness is a load better than not - and being in a freezer improves this even b...

Re: Vac pack and done?
Haha - you seen that sale on at simply hops?! Was tempted myself. In answer to the question at hand - I think it's both. UV and O2 certainly both have an effect on lots of things - and I imagine this includes hops. I have some of my hops in the freezer (what I can fit it) and some in a cool dark cup...

Re: Help butchering fridge, please
I got a free fridge to butcher from a neighbour. I agree with the above that the only way to convert the fridge if the kegs don't fit in as is is to bend the plate. It worked for me - going very slowly!! I left the top of the plate intact and bent down the plate on the bottom and screwed it to the w...

Re: Double dry hopping techniques?
Any ideas / link to which hops are more prone to nasty flavours from extended dry hopping?

Re: Double dry hopping techniques?
Thanks sub82 - perhaps should have just done this (prob next time?!) but -
Update - I ended up dry hopping for 7 days and then transferred to a secondary (with co2 injected into secondary) and I've added 2 muslin bags (boiled) with 25g of amarillo whole leaf in each. Tastes great already.

Re: Mash efficiency down - position of hose or temp?
I agree with what a few have said in terms of if the braided hose sits high then the water will take the path of least resistance and once it's in the hose it ain't coming back out. I have a very simple copper manifold I made in the bottom of a rectangle Coolbox and normally get eff of 80%+. That's ...

Re: Double dry hopping techniques?
Thanks for the ideas fellas. In the end I've put 50g pellets of each centennial and citra in the primary and will add some Amarillo in a bag after about 5 days and dry hop for another 5days I think.... Not gonna transfer to a secondary. I have hop bags but stress out about them causing a infection.....

Re: Double dry hopping techniques?
Padalac- this was my thinking /worry. I've got a fair bit of 150L crystal in there too and I don't want oxidisation to make that taste all pruney. Also as it's 24L of 7.8% it might well not get drunk too quick...so might be around long enough for any oxidisation to take effect? I'd appreciate though...

Double dry hopping techniques?
I want to dry hop my 150IBU 7.8% DIPA twice. I've read about American Brewers dry hopping their beers for 4-5 days then, dry hopping again. I think they remove the first dry hops before adding more. I was thinking of just chucking in some hop pellets in the primary FV leaving for 4 days and then chu...

Re: PhD IPA (a red DIPA with a load of hops)
Had a taste out of the fermenter - still bubbling away nicely at 18 deg. Ohhhh - that's bitter...!!! Quite nice though - for a still fermenting, warm and flat beer. Should be nice when it mellows a little.

Re: PhD IPA (a red DIPA with a load of hops)
I heard about this technique - using all the hops in the last 10mins from a podcast. It's what some American Breweries do apparently... Tasted the wort going into the fermenter - it was very bitter...! But very tasty.
Will keep you posted.
