Re: AG#31 - Honey Ale

Hope it turns out well! Do you need to boil the honey to sterilise it? Or is it OK as is? Well Jim, that's the question that seems to fuel the debate about when to add the honey :D The honey that I am using in this trial brew is a decent quality supermarket one, so in my opinion this must have been...

AG#31 - Honey Ale

I decided to try a brewday on a school night, as it was a smaller batch volume and I figured that this would make for a relatively short brew time and I was right. I was all mashed in just after 6pm and was pitching the yeast just before 10pm, with only the main Grainfather boiler left the clean :) ...

Re: AG#30 - Citra Delight (GF#1)

I kegged this brew last Sunday, and tried a sneaky half pint tester after 5 days, and for any beer that tastes this good at this early stage, it get's my vote :D 20180615_195706.jpg Even though the Citra are strong, the sweet malt base is present, and I would assume that this will balance out a bit ...

Re: AG#30 - Citra Delight (GF#1)

I checked the gravity on day 8, and it was sitting at 1.014 and there was still that thick gloopy krausen on top of the brew that you get with West Coast yeast. Checked it again today on day 11 and the krausen was gone and the gravity is now reading 1.011, so I've added the 50g of Citra Pellets dry ...

Re: AG#30 - Citra Delight (GF#1)

Brilliant write up MB. I love my Grainfather, it has reignited my spark for brewing and makes me want to brew regularly. Cheers MG, I hadn't lost my spark, but my 3 vessel kit took up a fair bit of room when I wasn't using it and my homemade boiler had lasted well for the 29 brews that I used it fo...

Usually brewhouse efficiency is down the sparge in my experience.

Nice post for anyone considering a GF. :)
I would say that my sparge went well, as my mash efficiency was 88%, but I think that I lost some wort in the chiller that probably affected my overall brewhouse efficiency.

AG#30 - Citra Delight (GF#1)

After lots of reading, watching YouTube videos, saving and also the selling of some kit, I finally received my Grainfather on Monday this week :D I can honestly say that it was a joy to use, and it made most of the brewday experience very relaxing, as everything felt very controlled. The only stage ...

Re: AG#28 - Fool's Pale Ale (NZ)

Mine neither. The NZ hops were very disappointing. Maybe too old. Yeah, I'm thinking I had the same issue too. Both of my 100g packs were sealed and stored in the freezer, but the Wai-iti were 2014 and even though the Cascade were 2016, they didn't excite me when I opened the pack. The 2017 Citra p...

Re: AG#28 - Fool's Pale Ale (NZ)

This brew hasn't quite turned out as I'd hopped, but saying that I have been making regular trips to my keg in the garage in this hot weather. It is certainly very refreshing, if not a little bit more bitter than I wanted and the hops aren't as powerful as I was expecting either, considering how man...

Re: Grainfather first brew - bit of a disaster

Well, did my first Grainfather brew last night and all went fairly well. Having never used a counterflow chiller before, I was being a bit of a numpty with the whole process, but then realised that I needed to slow the hot wort flow down! #-o I went with the Grainfather recipe figures for this this ...

Re: question for anyone that has done dennis king's galaxy delight

Hi Dennis, What ballpark starting alkalinity should I be shooting for with this grainbill please? Planning a Citra, Galaxy and Apollo version with your grain bill and hop timings :) Cheers MB I normally aim for around 20ppm Brewing Citra Delight this evening and got my water down to 19.5ppm  ...

Re: Grainfather first brew - bit of a disaster

I'm probably way behind with this, but I was playing with the GF recipe designer at the weekend and noticed that the Grainfather absorption rate is now adjustable.

Literally waiting for DPD to deliver mine today.

Cheers

Cheers Dennis,

Have you tried this grainbill with any other hop variety?
