Re: Bypassing fridge thermostat
Yup, I never had to touch the earth - definitely still connected. The Live, neutral and earth come in to a terminal block from the mains plug, that hasn't changed. The earth is still connected to the metalwork- thats unchanged too. But from the terminal block the live goes to the STC and from there ...

Re: Bypassing fridge thermostat
I did as WonkyDonkey suggests - I fitted an STC 1000 to my fermenting/chiller fridge, I bought 2m of 4 core flex and an STC1000 This is what I did on my fridge... I UNPLUGGED THE FRIDGE!!! Then I took the stat off the side of the fridge and fed the STC temp. sensor wire through from the back into th...

Re: homemade apple press and scratter in action
Hi Scotsloon, Hopefully this will help. Please note the whole thing was built from scrap wood scavenged from various places. I'm fortunate to have a charity-run wood recycling project nearby where I got most of the wood. I never had any plans I just designed as I went, I think it is probably over-en...

Re: and now it ends - the 1st cider of autumn in the glass
The first pint of this years crop, clear and bright (thats condensation on the glass), very dry which is just how I like it and needing a little more bite I think, the lack of cookers or proper cider apples shows up in the lack of acidity. That said it isn't 'flabby' so I'm very happy with it https:...

Re: Cheap scratter
My daughter took this picture 2 weeks ago when we were scratting, please excuse her helpful notations! https://i.imgur.com/y5R3t5vm.jpg The scratter is the waste disposal unit, I got it second hand for £8 or £9 IIRC and then I dismantled it for Very careful cleaning and sterilising. I mounted it on ...

Re: Aldi remote control barbecue thermometer
Thanks Hanglow, they're in the clearance at £4.99 now but I'll probably give it a miss, I think I'm just in the mood for more gadgetry which i dont really need.

Re: Aldi remote control barbecue thermometer
Yes I'm using an stc but I've no idea which version it is. I've never really thought about the whole monitoring/data logging aspect before, I just set the target temp and come back a few days later when it's done. From what you suggest I think I'll check the stc over before doing anything else Cheer...

Aldi remote control barbecue thermometer
Has anyone got one of these?
I saw some in the clearance section at Aldi and thought they might work for brewing. No clues on the packet about the working temperature range though so I wondered if anyone hadone. Thinking about using the remote to monitor fermentation

Re: Sparge water help
Sounds about right. When I'm doing a 23litre brew I normally use about 32litres in total, 10-12l for the mash and I batch sparge with two lots of 10l, this gives me around 26-28l in the boiler depending on mash losses. Then i boil until it drops to between 24 and 25 left, which gives me about 23 in ...

pics! first shows the two ciders, the top one is the 1st brew after racking, with a really pinkish tinge caused by the redskinned apples I used, the lower one, still fermenting is the same mix of apples as the top one but with 1.2l blacberry juice added http://i.imgur.com/aA8Ehey.jpg The blackberry ...

Re: Sulphur smells - edit - which nutrient
Following on from this, 2 batches now brewed with nutrient added and no nasty smells, I've run out of nutrient and need to order more but I'm faced with "yeast nutrient" powder and "Vitamin B1 yeast nutrient" tablets. I'd rather spend £2 on 100 tablets at around 5 per brew than £2 on enough powder f...

2nd cider of autumn
Well the apples continue to fall and the blackberries ripen so; 50l loose windfall apples gave approx 30l pulp which gave 15l juice, add 3 campden tablets and 3 tsp pectolase. After 2 days I racked my 1st cider of autumn and used 300ml of yeast sludge from that to begin fermenting this one. Next day...

Re: and so it begins... first cider of autumn!
Any pics of the scratter build wonky? My eldest is coming to her grans with me tomorrow, she wants windfalls for making crumble, I want them for more cider but this'll have blackberries in it too - not a clue how that'll come out. Had to do a bottlecount today - I'm in danger of running out of empties
