Re: Bottle cappers
Don't laugh at this but it works ! I had a black plastic 2 handled one (think it was a youngs ) but it soon became worn. I drilled out the rivets and removed the bit with the metal cup on that's all I used. This was screwed onto a 2 foot length of 3x2 about 6 inch from the end and a hinge was fasted...

S30 gas cylinders
I notice on the Leyland home brew web site that S30 exchange cylinders are only for personal collection from the shop. How do you go on if you live miles away from a shop and need one ? Does anyone supply on line and how do you get the old cylinder back ? John Brown

I have a very old burco which is square in shape with a round boiler inside ,holds 44 ltr and is rated at 3 Kw. The element is caked in carbon after forgetting to switch off before I added and stirred in DME !! I have got most of it off by soaking in Oxiclean and lots of scraping . What is the best ...

Black malt in Old Speck hen
Has anyone made AG version of old speckled hen from the Graham Wheeler book ? I find that using 30 g of black malt too much and gives a darker beer with a drier taste than the commercial product. The second time I made it I reduced it to 20g and it was better for me. The black malt I used was ready ...

Re: strike temperature
Thanks JIm. I used 2.5Ltr to each Kg of grain as in Graham Wheelers book but it most likely ended up as 3Ltr by the time extra hot water was added

strike temperature
I have 2 mash tuns both homemade and find both have the same problem. If I fill with water at 72c ( after heating the tun) adding the grain brings it down to about 63-64 and have to add hot water to get it back up to 66C I find I have to start at about 75-76 and then add grain to get a mash of 66c. ...

Re: Any groups in or around the Preston area?
Its a coincidence someone mentioned The Guild Ale house I'm just about to jump on the bus and go there ! I've known Gary for quite a while and he is a keen real ale man. PS in Lostock Hall we have a local Brewery ,Bishops Crook run by Dave Bishop and Ian Crook and Gary quite often has the brews on t...

Re: Any groups in or around the Preston area?
I'm in Lostock Hall and on a good day can see Leyland Home Brew !!Started brewing when Reg Maudling made it legal in 1963 ! We were well off then for supplies. We had Sweet and Dry in Lovat Road, Pauls Homebrew in Water Lane Something Brewing in Friagate as well as a decent range in Boots the chemis...

Re: Bench cappers
I did this ages ago and it works fine. Get a 2 foot length of 3x2 and screw it to a wall behind a work bench with an hinge. Fasten it the height of a bottle from the bench surface. Under the wood, about half way along, screw a cup removed from a busted black youngs capper. Put the bottle under with ...

gallon demijohns ex cider
Just been given some 1 gallon demijohns that were used for cider. As you know they wont take a standard rubber airlock bung because the neck has a smaller inside diameter . As they came without a screw on cap I was just about to dump them when I had a brainwave ! I looked through our kitchen cupboar...

Re: bottling stick
Think its sorted now. A short piece of tube I/D half inch on to the tap and fitted in the other end a piece of tube O/D half inch and I/D 3/8 inch ands then to the bottling stick.
