Finings. Does Irish moss carry on fining after boil

Oops, subject length is limited, I was trying to get the whole question in. I have ordered Irish Moss for my copper finings and have as yet, haven't ordered anything else for subsequent finings in my bottles. First question: Is the action of the Irish Moss likely to continue after bottling? 2) Is th...

Re: Chemical free beer

So RO water I guess, and I'm assuming hops are simply vacuum packed (or am I assuming too much?). I used RO water years ago, just once. Worst brew ever! The water is stripped of pretty much everything and so very, very vulnerable to bacteria etc I stuck with using it for my tropical marine tanks an...

My first full grain brew coming soon! :)

Hi folks, Finally managed to get my order in for my remaining equipment items, fermenter bins, syphon tubing etc and ingredients! Can't wait to get cracking on my first brew, just hope I don't mess it up [-o< I'm going to have a go at "Brewer's Pride" from John Parkes' Home Brewing book. Anyone got ...

Re: Newbie - My first home made boiler

Cheers for your help Steve, The pan is 34l which I think off hand is around 7.5 gallons. I don't intend to fill it as being new I wasn't sure how much head space was best left when at the rolling boiling stage. I didn't want a risk of a boil over. The whole pipe assembly is currently 14mm and sits f...

Re: Newbie - My first home made boiler

In a similiar vein to the Mash Tun, you want the holes on the bottom side of the pies ideally, this will reduce your deadspace. Apart from that it looks good. Ahh right, the holes do go underneath as well but would it have been better if they just fed from the sides and underneath, rather than than...

Newbie - My first home made boiler

Continuing on from yesterday's mash tun building exploits and using up the remains of my plumbing bits and pieces I started building my boiler today. I still have to fit a thermometer - I want one of those really cool looking, steampunky dial types that stick out of the front. For now heating will b...

Re: Newbie - My first home made mash tun

To be honest mine is just pushed together and has never fallen apart when mashing in. Of course for your piece of mind you can do as you suggest and make sure the fittings are not too loose. That's reassuring to know, I had visions of the whole thing dropping to bits unseen in the mash. little tip ...

Re: Newbie - My first home made mash tun

Cheers for that sllimeel, I was wondering if that would work when assembling it. Glad it's only pushed together. About that, is the action of stirring the mash likely to disturb the pipe assembly? I thought it maybe would so was thinking about banging the ends of the elbows and T piece etc with a he...

Newbie - My first home made mash tun

Hi, Well, I got a load of plumbing bits and bobs yesterday and this morning I put together my first mash tun. I was originally going to go for a false bottom using perforated stainless steel sheet but the insulated box i found kicking about has got curved walls which would make getting a sheet to fi...

Suitability of ex red wine oak barrels for conditioning beer

Hi, Just a quicky from this newb... I've had a search around here but not found anything with respect to the suitability of using oak casks that have been used to condition wine for beer conditioning. I live in France and have a friend in the wine industry in Bordeaux who basically has to get rid of...
