Re: Home grown hops 2022
Well, that puts mine to shame Meaty =D> How long have they been in? Varies from 3 to 5 years I think. I have 2 of each variety grown opposite each other so they can eventually intertwine without getting them mixed up. We live in a bungalow hence I have to train them in a zig-zag pattern which they ...

Sounds like you've got it sorted at the first attempt

Re: Home grown hops 2022
How are people fairing with their hops given the incredibly hot weather? I've a number of Challenger bines that have survived so far, just a bit of scorching on the leaves, but plenty of flowers on at the moment. Hosepipe ban about to come into force in just over a week though :( Stopped watering m...

Re: Leaf hop supplies
.......using leaf , my stock occupied a lot of freezer space...... My problem but as I grow my own, I'm stuck with sweet talking the wife into running a 2nd freezer in the garage - getting more and more flak with the costs spiralling! Plus 1 for crossmyloof as suppliers but don't think they do leaf.

Re: Northumbrian Water Quality Reports
That's good to see. Yorkshire Water only publish partial info' but if you contact them they'll provide everything you need and usually more up to date than the published data. I tend to collate the results over a few years and then average out given the water 'profile' will be changing slightly thro...

Re: Help Needed
A rehydration, a starter and a fermentation are different. Gee - thanks Mashbag, I hadn't realised!!!!!!!!!! I would just add that Safale recommend 25-29C for rehydration so a good bit below Lallemand and a hell of a difference if you take the lower end of the former and the upper end of the...

Re: Help Needed
Don't get hung up about yeast. This is direct quote from lallemand one of the largest yeast manufacturers. "Sprinkle the yeast on the surface of 10 times its weight in clean, sterilized water at 30-35°C (86- 95F). - Leave it undisturbed for 15 minutes, stir gently to suspend yeast completely. - Lea...

Re: Help Needed
No i haven't given in Hi Bigstig Only just seen this so a bit late to the table. Great to hear you are persevering although as soon as you get your first 'acceptable' beer you'll be hooked in any case  I just wanted to add one thing and that's your bit about rehydrating the yeast at 30C. Pers...

Re: Hop advice please
Ok I am in. What was the hop chedule? Difficult to replicate the bittering hops (90 minute boil) for any of my brews as they're my own home grown. For this 'house' IPA it's 50g Cascade and 50g Northdown. Then 50g Styrian post boil at 55c for 15 minutes. Might sound a lot but I only get an apparentl...

Re: Hop advice please
Mates voted my 113th all grain brew as the best beer they've tasted. Probably over the top but they usually don't hold back if they don't like something! It was to use up some end-of-bags so had 25g each of El Dorado, Galaxy and Simcoe - dry hop. Have also tried it with Mosaic and Galaxy and nearly ...

Re: Alpha acid analysis
Would anyone be interested in getting there homegrown hops analysed for alpha acids ? I managed to get a lab to carry out the analysis for a reasonable cost approx £10. We would need roughly 50 samples which are dried and vacuums packed to make it cost effective. Let me know if you are Interested ....

Re: Home grown hops 2021
Hi Pete Posted my own query on hops which I've crossed referenced to yours so as not to hijack it: https://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=83455 As far as your situation is concerned, read/research as much as you can. In terms of hop harvesting I hate this time of year (albeit I usu...

Something different this year
Didn't want to hijack Pete's post but thought he might find mine useful/interesting? https://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&p=859333#p859333 I've grown my own for around 10 years - around 7 where we are now in North Yorkshire (not a mecca for hops I agree). I grow Northdown, Fuggles,...
