Re: British hops
Presumably the can is to denote scale rather than suggest it was sent with the hops. I did wonder if it was one of those weird gifts you sometimes get, particularly from businesses that mostly sell to other businesses, like little bags of Haribo or something. On the bag it says 5kg net… Maybe the w...

Re: Brewing for Ukraine...
There's an organised effort to brew an "anti-imperial stout" called Resist, designed by Ukrainian brewers with beetroot :

Re: British hops
Thanks. I assume that's a 60min boil. Below 80. Ooooo I wasn't expecting that. I stand @ 85c for 30 and thought I was extreme. Alpha acids isomerise over 80C, so any time you have hops above that temperature will see bittering increase and it's normally considered the upper limit for whirlpool addi...

Re: British hops
I wouldn't be too scared of Jester - as I said there, I've only ever really got a big mango hit from the early Faram test brews, in commercial production it seems somewhat variable, but seems to be more blackcurranty with just a hint of a tropical thing. Maybe see if you can find it in a commercial ...

Re: British hops
I talked about some of the newer ones here : https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/new-uk-varieties-jester-olicana-et-al-what-does-everyone-think-of-them.90881/#post-974445 I love Bramling Cross, but it can be a bit much on its own, better blended with Goldings IMO, and beware vintage variation...
Re: Old hops
Has anyone got any tips for brewing with older hops? You know the ones you bought with a recipe that never happens.... And they are now vac packed in the freezer. They keep surprisingly well if cold and not exposed to oxygen, they can decline at rates of <10% per year in those conditions so don't a...

Re: Has anyone compared heirloom barley to m o?
Here at the S Cheshire Malt Buying Co-operative we have been told the following from Crisp "They have had low enzyme activity reports. You need to mash at 63C and for an extra 30 mins. Also using 10% pale malt helps The enzyme activity is low on the Chevallier Shane Swindells (@unclepumple of this ...

Re: Small tank of oxygen for aeration?
I strongly suspect that there are many ways to skin the proverbial cat! And it depends on the breed of cat you wish to skin (euphemism for beer variety being brewed). As I said above - it's far more to do with the oxygen requirements of particular yeast strains. If you're using Yorkshire yeast they...

Re: Small tank of oxygen for aeration?
Hi what do you guys use to aerate the wort prior to pitching the yeast? Do you just make sure to splash the wort around allot or do you use pure oxygen from a tank and a diffusion type stone? If the latter then does anyone know where to get a supply of cheap(ish) oxygen in a tank form? It depends w...

Re: Fullers ESB 'Can you brew it'
I basically glanced at this thread and my brewing book and matched up via pure guess-work as best I could picking ingredients I had in stock that I thought were reasonably close. There's no need to guess these days, as Fuller's have published pics of their brewbooks - see the start of this thread o...

Which water profile do you suggest? Cheers! Marc The Murphy profiles are a good starting point that should be fairly representative of actual practice in British commercial breweries as opposed to some of the strange ideas emanating from across the pond : https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/...

Re: Calculating Quantity of Hops Required When the Recipe Only States Required IBU
The first addition is of centennial at thirty minutes and should be or produce 6 IBU. The second addition is again of centennial at five minutes and be or produce 1 IBU, the total being 6 IBU. 6+1=6??? You don't get 100% utilisation even at 60 min, and 30 min will give you ~75% of the bitterness of...

Re: Brew Pub Shed Build
My brewhouse (or garage as others call it) has been dry lined and has a vinyl floor from a single piece of vinyl. The amount of water and wort which gets dripped or spilled means vinyl is the only sensible option. And if you're expecting to drop nutritious wort on vinyl, it's worth running it a cou...
