Yeast Starter Temperature?
I'm making a starter for WLP 830, for a lager, c1050 og. lager hopefully. What temperature would you suggest I ferment the starter at, bearing in mind that when I ferment the lager it will be at 10c. If I do the starter at 20c, will this transfer any off tastes into the lager? Am I best off doing th...

Re: Re-Using Wyeast (or any yeast?)
Nice one! I'm going to give this a go on the next brew.

Re: step up starter
An alternative to stir plates is the 'shaken not stirred method' (search for yeast whisperer on this forum) which some would argue outperforms a stir plate at extremely low cost - all that's required is a large starter vessel (which you need anyway) a good shake (not sheik or for the Frank Zappa fan...

Re: Brew fridge v conditioning fridge.
No BenB, I think in this circumstance, more is definitely better, it would be a crime to run out of ale because of a lack of temp control chambers ....

Re: Brew fridge v conditioning fridge.
I'd go for a fermentation fridge as a priority personally, and then save up the pennies for a second fridge for conditioning / force carbing etc

Re: First A.G Lager- water treatment help needed
I live in a high ph area (South Staffs) and have been brewing lagers for about 6 months now. I agree with all of the posts above re getting a decent water report and working from there, however, as that involves time and then getting the right corrective ingredients, and I am guessing that you proba...

Re: Shaken, not Strirred
I've recently started collecting some slurry for re-use and so far I am on my third successful re-use of WLP 830. What I've found is that out of the packet, it took a lot longer for the starter to pick up than it has done from using slurry to make a starter. I've tried using slurry that has been kep...

Re: Lager Fermentation
I used the saflager in a recent lager hybrid (I used golden promise instead of pilsner malt, being the only real difference to lager recipes I had picked up on here). After primary fermentation @ 12 degrees Celsius in my fermentation fridge and a diacetyl rest @ 18 degrees for 3 days, I primed for s...

Re: SS Brewtech 10 Gallon Kettle
I've just bought a 15 gallon one of these with a false bottom, so I'm really interested in this topic, but I don't understand what is meant by 'whirlpool'. Is it just give it a damn good stir for a couple of minutes to get it going round in the boiler and then leave it to settle? I assume this drags...

Re: Sodium Percarbonate and skincare
Thanks for the advice everyone, I'm using it as a cleaner before using Starsan to sanitise, no ill effects on the hands so far.

Sodium Percarbonate and skincare
Hi, can anyone advise please on whether I would need to wear some form of skin protection when cleaning / sterilising FV's Cornies and boilers etc with Sodium Percarbonate? I don't bother using gloves or other protection with chlorine based cleaner / steriliser, but understand that Sodium Percarbona...

Re: Saflager W-34/70
[quote="beerlover36"]I've used 34/70 for a few lager brews over the winter and it's been excellent. I fermented at around 13/14 C and got down to FG in a week on each occasion, that may seem a little warm but the instructions say 12-15C, and there was absolutely no off-flavours. The only other time ...

Re: 1st lager - oh Vienna!
Just about to embark on my first AG lager and this recipe and fermentation schedule sounds great. I was looking for the grain and hop volumes / quantities in your recipe and couldn't find them - any chance you can post the quantities so I can follow the recipe please. I will keg the finished product...
