Re: Just bought my first beer engine

You may try using a the propane regulator for a gas grill. Supposedly its a demand valve that reduces the pressure of the propane to 1atm. Just like a cask breather! I actually have a cask breather and haven't tried the propane regulator.
Good luck with the engine!

Re: Discuss JBK Prize Winning Recipes

A local, but nationally recognized, homebrewer puts on his own contest thumbing his nose at exactly this discussion. His categories are session, hoppy, malty, roasty, etc... Lets judge beer on whether its good or not. Oh, and I won two categories, but haven't posted them because I never bothered to ...

I actually have no idea how the tablets work, but I can taste the effects of when I forget to use them.

Re: Tasting Malt and Hops? Better understanding of each vari

Have you got 5 4-litre fermentation vessels? Not yet. The only way would be to buy plastic bottles of juice or "jug" wine. Sorry for the confusion of fermentation. I just assumed things would be "normal" after splitting the batches. phatboytall: If you only have one pan then perhaps a big charge an...

Re: Hop Utilisation

I should provide further details. The bags I use are paint strainers meant to fit over a 5 gallon bucket, very big. I suspend it over the kettle using a jig I crafted so I can add hops to the bag when necessary. No picture unfortunately.

Re: Tasting Malt and Hops? Better understanding of each vari

I've been toying with the idea of making 20L of "something standard" out of the mash tun and boiling it in 4L batches each with a different hop. Quick and easy(?) way of getting a good understanding. Quick 15 minute boils and use the late hop method. I guess you could make a mini-mash and proportion...

Re: Hop Utilisation

Shouldn't be a problem. I use a fine mesh nylon paint strainer to hold my pellet hops. I give it a swirl every 5-10 minutes and have never seen a lack of bitterness. I do not change the hop amounts to compensate for the bag.

Re: ag white shield. og 1060 too high

You'll need to measure the gravity of the pre-boil wort to get your efficiency. The gravity changes during the sparge depending on when you take a reading. But then again, if you're getting 83% then great!

Re: Beer engine bubble question

I agree with the above. Pour a beer from a bottle conditioned beer and you"ll get the "bubbling effect". My best case would be gravity dispense, personal preference, in lieu of that I try to get the beer out of my corny keg with as little disturbance as possible.

Re: Beer engine bubble question

AAHHHH!
Another North/South debate.
I have a regular neck and still get the bubbles rising. I'm to believe that it's just the nature of something carbonated moving through the cylinder and lines.

Re: Advice for Beer Taps in my kitchen

I did a small bit of research on this to get the beer out of my chest freezer with all intentions of pumping beer up from the basement to the kitchen counter. It would have been tremendous! Until the wife killed the idea.
Good luck.

Re: Brewday 04/02/11 - pale ale

Thanks. I have heard of CYBI, just couldn't figure out the acronym.
Epic was featured on one of the Brewmasters shows on Discovery Channel in the US. Dogfish did a collaboration brew with them and then went down to NZ. To taste it.
