Re: Brewing alcohol free

I read this thread and got a little excited at the prospect of producing good almost alcohol free beer. I haven’t brewed for a few years, but am keen to get back into it now, particularly brewing low alcohol beers. I took in a lot of PeeBee’s advice here and much thanks is owed for taking the time ...

Re: Ginger

Also, I'd put the ginger powder in the boil if you want to put it in. I can't see the flavour being driven away in the boil, nor can I see it interfering in the fermentation. In case it helps, although I appreciate it is completely different, I have made batches of Mena Dhu like Stout which uses li...

Re: Spent grain disposal - what do you do with it?

With a small Millstream in the back garden, I always ladle a few scoops into the Millstream, to feed the minnows. These in turn attract the Kingfisher to the garden! I scatter the rest on areas of weed or moss in the back lawn. The mallards and moorhens then eat it over the course of two or three da...

Re: How many trees?

Wow, what fantastic advice already. The only thing I would add is why don’t you consider some blackcurrants? A couple of bushes are incredibly easy to look after, yield extremely well and are too tart for the birds to bother stealing / harvesting! They freeze incredibly well and last at least a coup...

I get a list of minerals and various other parameters but the list doesn't include things like calcium, bicarbonate, magnesium, etc.
I may be missing something?

Try GL17 0SL (not my postcode but gives same report).
Wallybrew sorted it!

Re: Ashbeck water and epsom salt?

After my initial flurry of reading when I first started Brewing two years ago I discovered that most good quality all grain brews probably had all the constituents for a healthy fermentation. The big specialist yeast book suggested magnesium and particularly zinc maybe trace elements that could pote...

Re: Brewing plans while stuck at home

Cheers Jason, I knew it wasn't my original idea and there it is in my copy of that excellent book too. Might be subliminal influence, but would love to know if others use it, though doubt we will have scientific proof either way. As you say, unlikely to spoil anything so may try sometime. Their Nuss...

In theory I am due to collect a few sacks of malt from Muntons in Stowmarket on Thursday, but not sure it's wise given the latest situation...
That's quite a walk for your daily constitutional; perhaps 15 miles each way, with a sack or two on your back on the way home. 8)

Re: Brewing plans while stuck at home

I won't be able to up my brewing as I'm spending more at the store on essentials, mainly far more expensive items that I'm only getting because the lower price stuff I usually get is out of stock. Thanks hoarders. I'm sorry to hear that Rookie - it's as if the world's gone mad. I've heard it's the ...

Re: Northern Brewer

Hello!... I am planning a Kolsch and noticed I have an unused bag of Northern Brewer, is this a good pairing? I've done some research to check but not much was coming up. Cali Common instead? Made an enjoyable one from Greg Hughes' "Home brew beer" book; used 100gm pack of Northern Brewer perfectly.

Brilliant! I got one from aldi the other week, work a treat.
Shop all the time in Aldi, not seen them in our 3 local branches, but I'm told they are in Lidl, can anyone confirm as we don't have a local Lidl?

Re: Shortage of malt?

I think Malt Miller delivery was 6 tons of base malt (?MO) today, so it seems there will be no real shortage.

Re: Shortage of malt?

Where else can you buy 25 kg of malt for less than £30 including transport ? Almost any local brewery - who will really be feeling the pinch at the moment, and will probably have a whole load of malt/hops that they won't be brewing with in the near future because the pubs are shut. £20 on a sack of...
