Hi
My Grainfather temparature gauge is permanently reading 100 and the controller is giving off a beeping alarm. Has anyone seen this behaviour? I suspect the controller is toast but hoping it may be something simpler like a fault probe.
Cheers!

Re: Grainfather App Water Calculator
It is worth getting water reports from your surrounding areas too, it is surprising what a difference there can be between neighbouring areas. My local water supply is ideal for London style ales but the water supply in the next village is so low in minerals that I brew Pilsners with it and do nothi...

Re: The Great British Brew-off?
I have watched all five episodes and quite enjoyed it. I thought that, even for a home brewer, watching other people brew on TV would be a bit like watching grass grow; but they managed to keep it fairly entertaining by including other challenges - branding, food pairing etc. The brewers weren't bad...

Re: Brew Pub Shed Build
Hey Spook, that is one gorgeous set up! Beautifully planned and wonderfully executed. Very neat, very efficient looking. Enjoy brewing in your new brewery. One query, if I may. Is the extractor you've fitted powerful enough to remove all the steam? Guy Thanks Guy! These are cheap 150mm bathroon ext...

Re: Brew Pub Shed Build
I meant that it show you pushing the hot wort in at the bottom instead of at the top. If it is turned upside then when you are finished pumping you can drain down the wort. Aaahh, I see. Yes, I just have it that way around because it is an easier reach from the short hose to the pump upstand. I fli...

Close-up of the brew stand. S_20211121_142553.jpg Do you use the chiller with this set up. Yes, I use a counter-flow chiller. It is the black piece of kit on the worktop in the picture of the brew stand. The blue hose is connected to the tap as the cold water inlet. The red hose is the hot water ou...

Re: Brew Pub Shed Build
Very nice. How is the shelf with the water heater on it supported ? It is semi-floating - in the corner and supported along the two edges that meet the walls. I had planned its position in advance and put 2x4s behind the plasterboard so that it could be securely fixed. The shelf itself is made from ...

Re: Brew Pub Shed Build
The brewery is complete now, I just need to put in some storage and shelves for all the brewing paraphenalia. I did my first brew in it yesterday (Bohemian Pilsner) and it was very cozy and comfortable and everything worked as planned so feeling quite smug about it.

PB, Thanks for the Flowers, they are BLM! (Bloody Lovely Mun). I had never heard the word `Yarpie` until I read this Post. I didn`t hear it, I SAW it. I have searched every thread on JBK for it, done my Bloody head in. If you look at `Spook100`s profile, OP on this post, He describes himself as an ...

Beer fermented out to 1.000
A couple of years ago I experimented with making a lowish achohol bitter, around 2.5%. To prevent it tasting too thin, I mashed at 70C to produce a lot of long-chain, unfermentable sugurs that would add to the body but not the ABV. That all went to plan and I produced a beer with an OG of 1.030 and ...

Re: Best use of controller probes
Thanks for your insight -very useful. In my (very) limited experience I am wondering if occasionally overiding the automatic controls woiuld help? I know this defeats the object of an automatic controller but disconnecting the heater for example will stop the constant cycling between heating and co...

Re: Best use of controller probes
I have been reading up on Thermowells - can you recommend one? Cheers! I have found that thermowells don't actually work that well in a fermentation fridge because the probe is effectively immersed in a liquid that has a thermal capacity something like 20x that of air. This means that if, for examp...

Re: Brew Pub Shed Build
After a bit of an hiatus in the build over the summer, I have started making some progress again in the last month or so. Electrics and plumbing are now in and the brewery section is structurally complete, I just need to do the finishes in there. I haven't made any progress in the pub section becaus...
