Re: Norwich Amateur Brewers - Brew Like a Monk competition.

It was a cracking day out for me. I judged some Saisons in the morning with an Italian lady who'd come all the way from somewhere near Rome to Diss to judge! And then with Andy the Head Brewer of Ampersand, we judged half of the Dark Strong beers. I was then very pleased to get Gold for both my Witb...

Re: Fool Proof Pilsner

A couple of comments. 1) Lagers don't really take weeks to ferment. 2-3 weeks is typical at temperatures below 14/15C. The thing which they do need is a longish period of cold conditioning post fermentation, but you can do this in the bottle. 2) If you have the ability to brew under pressure (fermen...

Re: New container

I think many of us do the same! I have an old plastic dustbin which stores the sack(s) of base malts once opened (& part used) and a plastic box with a clip on lid which stores the miscellaneous bags and part bags of other malts. Reminder to self: get some beers made as there's rather a lot of malt,...

Re: Help me lighten my mash tun

Many similar thoughts here to mine, but your question was about extract recipes. Many of the Graham Wheeler recipes have extract versions. Have you looked at his books? https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/bn_7024824021 e.g. His recipe for Young's Special uses 1.6Kg of Pale Malt Extract and 1.6Kg of Diastatic M...

Re: Jelly Like Drop-Out

Interesting.

I simply chuck 1/2 a protofloc tablet into the boil about 10 mins before the end. Never noticed any jelly-like gunge.

Why do you rehydrate, Guy?

Re: starting all grain brewing

There are many ways to make beer. Some are quick and easy, some more complex and time consuming. There are also cheaper and more costly ways to get to the same end. As with many things in life, it comes down to the choices you make regarding the balance between what you are prepared to spend of both...

Re: bottles

I have a bench top capper which works perfectly for 26mm crown corks - can't recall where it came from. It also has a separate "bell" (didn't know it was called that) for 29mm crown corks which I occasionally use. This latter one is not so great, but maybe that is because I've used them on (re-used)...

Re: Blocked Pump !

I am comfortably over 100 batches on my GF30 and quite content with it. I've only made a couple of mods: I've got one (yes, one!) rolled edge plate which I use on the bottom as I have no problem with using the silicone gasket on the top plate. (I bought the plate form a fellow HBer who had concluded...

I’d love to try a bottle of that, but what is XML Ale yeast?

Re: torrefied wheat for a wit???

Thanks Jocky. I have checked with hydrometer and discovered it is an "idiot factor" at play here. It is possible with the Tilt to set calibration points and somehow I'd managed to set a few which seems to have had the effect of the "reading" it was reporting getting stuck at 1.037. The glass hydrome...

Re: torrefied wheat for a wit???

I have a wit on the go at present. Based on a previously successful recipe, but couldn't get the yeast I used last time: using Omega Wit yeast whereas last time I used Fermentum Mobile Magical Garden (MM had this before, but no-one seems to stock it at present). The issue I have is that the Omega ye...

So probably £3-4 per 20-25L batch, or perhaps 10p/pint.

Definitely noticeable how much Malt Miller prices have risen! As have the prices of malt direct from maltsters.

Re: Snozzle yeasts

I have grown yeast from bottles of Proper Job successfully and used the yeast to make a more than passable beer, so if these are bottle conditioned, you’re in with a good shout.

Let us know how you get on.
