Re: Grain to Alcohol Ratio
Having had the same thought/question myself, I agree with northern brewer. As stated, the sugar in the boil gives what it states (375) . The grain must be increased to match the sugar yield with the mash efficiency taken into account

Re: Beer Brewing Newbie - Woodfordes Wherry
I agree with Crafty. It may also be worth spending another couple of pounds and change the yeast (lots of advice on here) you could als add a tea spoon of yeast nutrient. I have one conditioning at the moment (tasted pretty good even at the time of bottling) expect an OG around 1040 and FG probably ...

Re: SQUEEZE YOUR BOTTLES?
Thanks again Chris. If Ive got it right you are saying the O2 in the head space is actually require by the yeast and it would be detrimental to create a "vacuum" as the vacuum would take up the pressure and thereby reduce the ability to carbonate...........Just a thought.............should probably ...

SQUEEZE YOUR BOTTLES?
We take great care not to introduce oxygen into our beer and take care to keep a blanket of CO2 over it. I tend to use PET bottles........Is there any benefit to squeezing them so that the beer fills the head space and then screw the cap on. Would this exclude all the air so only the CO2 produced by...

Re: Flat Lager and Cider
I also like a fizz in my lager and cider.............that still sounds like a lot of sugar though (about double) Is it possible the brews have been exposed to any extreme temperature...hot or cold. What type of yeast was it. How old was the yeast. What temperature was it pitched. Have you any nuts a...

Re: Length and Size vs Speed and Flow?
Shame  .............I'm still experimenting with an idea on the same lines. I like the idea of keeping it small and neat. Having said that 10mm or 8mm copper is only £1.00 per metre, so not the end of the world to make an immersion chiller. I just dont want a large piece of equipment hanging a...

Re: Wheat Beer
Hi Swiller. I bottled a Coopers Wheat about 10 days ago...........even though its meant to be a slightly cloudy beer, it's already clear! I know this doesnt answer your question, but I guess I will have a better idea in a couple of weeks!

Re: Length and Size vs Speed and Flow?
Waiting with great interest to see how efficient your cooler is. I love the idea of keeping kit compact. Does using a CFC result in a large amount of cold break matter in the FV..........does it matter?

Re: ALCOHOL MEASUREMENT
Surely this will only give the average ABV of 2 beers (both with known ABV) mixed together............we are trying to find the ABV of one which we know nothing about. Even applying the same theory by using a hydrometer and measuring the gravity of each, will only show the average gravity

Re: Counterflow Cooler Question
I'm experimenting with making a CFC using a very tight coil of 10mm or maybe even 8mm copper tube. That way the total length of the tube will be about 3 times greater but contained in a shorter outer tube. Just need to source the materials (mainly the large outer) then play with the flow rates. Not ...

Re: Bypassing the annoying Asda element on/off switch.
If you are getting "matter" stuck to the element, the sensor may be detecting an over heat. If you have not done so (sounds like you have not) then remove the small blue/grey pin and/or the bottom bi-matal disc. That is the only component which will cause it to "cycle"

CALCUTATING ALCOHOL FROM GRAIN
How do I calculate the likely ABV for my finished brew. For example if using LME then each KG gives 300 points and DME gives 374 etc. Is there a calculation to establish what the grain bill will yield. Do the different grain give different amounts of sugars. I assume the efficiency of the system is ...

Re: Bypassing the annoying Asda element on/off switch.
Built my boiler!!!!!! I studied and tested the ASDA element to establish what the components did. Simply saw off the upper plastic part which contains the switch gear and boill cut off. A small plastic pin will fall out of the back and can also be discarded. Pull out the tails for the neon light (th...

Re: GREASY TASTE
I must say, Chris,my local kebab shop does a top mixed special! This taste the guy was on about did ring a bell. Made me paranoid about my Coopers Mexican Cerveza which I have just tried. It's only been 2 weeks in the bottle and I started to convince myself it had that same greasy mouth feel he was ...
