Re: Phosphoric acid - supply
How's it going with the AMS, MashBag? I am not 'up' on water chemistry. Eric sorted me out. The buttery taste, wasn't the AMS, it was the brewing salts (DWB) addition. I was using too much. That too is now bang on. I adjust my liquor (for hoppy IPA) to 80ppm alk, as per Murphy's guides. Where on ea...

Re: Phosphoric acid - supply
I use and can recommend AMS from maltmiller (it is from Murphy's)... unless there a reason for phosphoric acid? How's it going with the AMS, MashBag? Looking at your posts on the subject from September/October last year you didn't seem too impressed. You noted a 'buttery' and 'mineral' taste in the...

Re: An uninspiring brew
Seems to have worked. Adding the Fuggle hops to the keg has livened up the taste of the beer.

Re: An uninspiring brew
I use the little hop canisters on fishing wire. No mess apart from taking the top off and shaking into a bin. Dip tubes and poppets block easily. Mine's a King Keg. I use a cask hop filter on the back of the tap. Stops the tap blocking. But then it should, shouldn't it, as that's what they're desig...

Re: An uninspiring brew
I have on occasion had a brew that needs fine tuning. As an alternative I've make up a hop concentrate and added that. Better flavour profiling imo & never fancied the mess of dry hopping. Plus I bottle all my brews, so it feels like another murky step to be cleaned up first. I suppose I could dry ...

An uninspiring brew
On February 1st I brewed a fairly straightforward beer. It was 91% Maris Otter, 3.5% pale crystal malt, 5.5% Vienna malt. 43 IBU from 28% Azacca, 22% Amarillo and 22% White Grape hops, with another 25g of White Grape in after the boil to make 100%. Fermented well and was kegged at day 6, which was 8...

Re: Dry Hopping - How much
How do I find these codes, please Eric? None of the yeasts, including the East Midlands yeast supplied by Brewlab, which could well be the Hardy and Hanson strain, have any codes I can see.
Thanks.

Re: Dry Hopping - How much
Ages ago I used to dry hop all my beers in the cask. Well, King Keg, actually!
Haven't done it for a long time, don't know why. A beer I brewed a few days ago will be ready for kegging very soon. Perhaps I'll give it a go, having read this thread. I always used about 20g of dry hops for 23L.

Re: WLP001 'Next Gen'
One for Eric!
The Brewlabs yeast profiles talk about low and high mineral worts.
What does this mean, please?
Thanks.

Re: Advice on spectacularly bad mash conversion
I’ve just brewed a saison (actually, Malt Miller’s Dupont). The outcome was a staggeringly low mash conversion: 47%. The result was 6 litres less saison than expected. It was all grain, all the grist mashed together, at 63C, in a RIMS system, so it maintained that temperature. It was 1½ degrees und...

Re: WLP001 'Next Gen'
Back on the subject at hand, reading this web page there does seem to be some reasoning behind the new packaging: https://www.whitelabs.com/news-update-detail?id=93 we have seen that yeast stays highly viable (over 90% on average) for up to 7 months from date of production release! With double the ...

Re: WLP001 'Next Gen'
This a really interesting one. If WL were producing both types of packaging then I think that the smaller volume pouches would be more popular on a price basis. Trouble is, the only way we can buy 001 is now in the new, larger packaging. As for pricing, what has been said above doesn't really stack...

WLP001 'Next Gen'
In a post back in November I queried the price rise for the 'Next Gen' liquid yeasts from Whitelabs. A big price rise 'justified' by a big increase in the number of yeast cells per sachet. One of the selling points was this number of cells is the accepted commercial pitch rate and ensures a quick st...
