Re: Yeast comparison test brew

A very brief coda on this experiment... I was reminded to return here after some comments on Fermentis T58 elsewhere. Three key takeaways from it for me :- 1) I've not used S04 since. I was disappointed with its performance in this batch and on reflection a lot of the taste characteristics I found f...

Re: Farewell to the Bishop

Uneventful brewday... except for a very slow runoff.... which got slower and slower until it stuck.

First time that's happened in a long time. Peculiar.

So, pitched it last night and it's just blow the lid off of FV. That's something of a surprise.

Re: Farewell to the Bishop

Dunno yet - will report back in a month or so. I'm hoping for some spicy Belgian character but without the esters you get when this yeast is pushed. Fermentis state it's good down to 16c and I'll be doing it at about 18 I think. I did a good trial of Belgian yeasts last winter where I was fermenting...

Farewell to the Bishop

Slight hat-tip to Oakhams Bishops Farewell. 92% MO, 8% Wheat malt. 26 IBU from challenger up front via first wort hopping. another 15 IBU from Cascades at 15 mins and a judicious slug of Cascades at flameout. I'm going to put it on a cake of T58 that's just finished a saison for me. Slightly odd cho...

Re: A hogshead, a firkin at a time

Ahh... it's been in the barrel now for a few months. I'll let it sit out the summer and then bottle off some in mid September I think. I took a 'negative control' bottling along to a brewers meeting here a few weeks ago - this was just a few bottles of the base beer before it has had the benefit of ...

Re: Blue 60ltr HDPE barrels as fv's?

I bought 8x 60 ltr ( new) Hdpe barrels for my grain store. Have used some as emergency fermenters with no issue. For reuse though there's some nooks and crannies in there that you're going to want to pay particular attention to when cleaning and sanitising. Adding near boiling water and giving one a...

Re: Beer from the Black Lodge

Ah Twin Peaks. That's a blast from the past. Completely compelling and utterly bonkers. Bit like the beer you've made :) http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1aomNQQen94/Tikjryns7KI/AAAAAAAAAJI/03XhvhUqGgI/s640/62.jpg Yeah, well... sometimes my arms bend back . It was a bit of a beast. Put in on some Nottingh...

Re: Beer from the Black Lodge

Bellebouche, we're in a similar neck of the woods in France, I've tried PM'ing you a couple of times but no reply. Great looking, inspiring brew here, would love to bottle swap etc etc etc with other brewers over here - why you no reply? Ooh. Nothing in my pm box on this forum from you! Let me send...

Re: AHA Big brew Day 2012

It went down really well. I think that the first reaction of anyone who is invited to a homebrew tasting/event is naturally cautious because I think that a great many people have all tasted nasty kit beers in the past. But, a little sunshine, some BBQ and then a leisurely afternoon eases things alon...

AHA Big brew Day 2012

As mentioned elsewhere I pitched in again on a 'Big Brew Day' - in common with thousands of other brewers I hosted a little bash at our place. 15 people turned up - weather was a big ropey but stayed pleasant enough to eat outdoors. I did my brewing demo under a big brolly in the end. Pics, recipe e...

Re: AHA - National Homebrew Day - 1st May

AHA - ;) This thread reawakend.. again! So, I did it again this year. Fed and watered 15 people for the 2012 version. We tasted seven of my beers and I made 40 litres of the northern english brown ale using the recipe from the Big Brew day website. A good time was had by all. Weather was gnarly but ...

Thanks for that feedback. I'm now convinced. Will report back in time when I've done it. Still busy sourcing a fermentation chiller for this.
