Re: Matts Truish Mild
Been investigating, and I think this style is closer to a porter than a mild.... but I will wait for a tester in bottle and glass before I do anything rash like re-naming it!

Re: Defintions of Beers, Skimming yeast and foam and hot break.
Interesting. Thanks Boingy. Well the beer nazis would seem to suggest that my latest creation is a "robust porter". I can live with that. It probably was to strong in hops and sugar to be anywhere near a mild. Hopefully when its glassed it will appear reddy brown, as it looks quite dark brown in the...

Re: Defintions of Beers, Skimming yeast and foam and hot break.
Thanks Stout, that makes me feel better about calling my beer a name I think is right, rather than trying to second guess other peoples opinion. I think my strong hoppy mild then can remain just that, a mild. I guess though, like crufts does with dogs, competion brewing must have stricter guidlines ...

Defintions of Beers, Skimming yeast and foam and hot break.
The same questions keep cropping up when I brew. And the more I look in to them the more I get confused. It seems like there is many answers to the same questions. Firstly: Beer styles. What makes a Mild different to a brown ale or a porter? What makes a bitter different to an IPA? Are there really ...

In fact looked at the glasses and your wort is crystal out of the tun. Ignore my advice!

Re: HELP! 3 inches of break material in the bottom of my boiler!
Right, I had a similar problem when I started AG. Exactly the same pictures, exactly the same fluffy textures. Having to leave it long term to compress so i could grain it off. It got to the point were i got a set of tights, sterilized them, doubled them up, and used them like a jam strainer for the...

Re: Matts Truish Mild
Its predicted at around 5.4 %. So it should keep. Not very modern mild in its style... I am thinking its qualities may be more brown ale or porter ish. Its also very hoppy as I steeped it over night with the 20g fuggles (and i chucked some other spare hops in too, i cant help myself!). This was beca...

Re: Matts Truish Mild
DSC00019.JPG I read in someones forum that they tip the boiler. I not only do this, but i sparge the hops too..... Probably wrong, but i hate to think of that thick syrupy wort going in to the compost. DSC00020.JPG I went for 24 litres, rather than 25. Achieving an SG of 1060. I think i need the sp...

Re: My first AG brew day - Foldings Guggle!
Your first attempt of AG home brewing is amazing! Mine was very DIY. As i see it. Lid on to achieve the boiling point and beginings of evap. Then remove slighty or completely. Don't worry about over evaporation... just prep water to top it up with after (treat it chemically, boil it or do nothing to...

Re: Matts Truish Mild
Add hops before reaching the boil is called 'first wort hopping' is supposed to produce a smoother bitterness so maybe its not so much of a cockup after all. As I say... I am very slapdash. Often it bears great results..... But on the odd occasion the bath gets 25 litres naf beer. Cheers Del! I use...

Re: Matts Truish Mild
Fuggles added prior to the hot break. Stupid me. I always do at least one thing wrong/different.
And a bit of Blesseds Black Beard Stout to make the night a bit warmer.... one of my own recipies, and delicious. (heavily hopped with pilgrim(harsh!))

Re: Matts Truish Mild
He's the boss of the tele when I'm in the kitchen brewing! I am slighty concerned about the designation of the brew..... I never have delved in to the world of brown. Mild, porter, brown ale..... I know if I had to enter it in to a competion it would have to meet parameters for a specific type of al...

Smells like a cross between antique funiture and syrup!
As you can see. A bit slapdash not much sterility (until after the boil)
One thing concerns me about warm wort oxidizing before the boil.... am i right to worry?
